WINCHESTER, Va. - Abby Marthins and Sammi Moonay each hit the back of the cage for the Dickinson field hockey team, but it would not be enough as the Red Devils fell 3-2 to Shenandoah University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
Hannah Spiri and Kelsey Jones each had a shot at goal blocked in the opening three minutes before Jones hit the target as she beat Saige Stevens with 3:21 gone. Dickinson answered right back less than a minute later when Hailey Womer put the ball on the stick of Marthins for the 1-1 tie. 53-seconds after the game-tying goal the Hornets responded as Farren Winter setup Mairead Mckibbin off a penalty corner inserted by Elizabeth Ranberger to take a 2-1 lead after one.
The second quarter belonged to the Hornets as they had the only seven shots of the period, but was unable to solve Stevens again.
Shenandoah continued to carry the play in the third recording the first seven attempts of the frame, forcing two stops by Stevens. Unfortunately, for the Red Devils, the home side took a 3-1 edge with 42:06 gone in the game when Cassidy Morrison finished off a pass from Mckibbin. Dickinson finally got their first shot since the 4:02 mark of the first when Sydney Engler had the ball swept off the goal line by Kylee Tuebner to send the game to the fourth.
Bridget Fontaine and Spiri tried to bring the visitors back into the game early in the fourth, but neither attempt reached the mark. In the final ten minutes of the game, it was all hands on deck for the Red Devils as Spiri and Womer missed the mark, while Engler, as well as Moonay, were denied by Katie Garman. With two seconds remaining in the game, DC would pull one back with Moonay depositing the ball behind Garman after the pass from Womer.

Dickinson returns home on Friday at 4 p.m. when they kickoff homecoming weekend by welcoming Washington and Lee to the Biddle Field Complex.
