MILACA — Another cross country invitational — more school records eclipsed.

Senior Laura Thompson and freshman Macy Hanson shattered yet another one of the Fairmont Cardinal girls cross country program’s all-time marks at the Milaca MegaMeet on Saturday.

Thompson crossed the 5,000-meter race’s finish line in a second-place overall time of 18:53.3 at Stones Throw Golf Club in Milaca, while Hanson captured third place overall in the Division 3 competition with a time of 19:05.9.

“I’d say both of their times are pretty noteworthy as Laura and Macy each broke our girls’ school record for runners competing at Milaca on Saturday,” said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk. “The record was set by Jenna Pavich with a time of 20:05 in 2016, so they broke it by quite a margin.”

Earlier this season, Thompson and Hanson became the first female Cardinal runners to break the 19-minute mark in a 5K race during the Tri-City United-hosted Gerry Smith Invitational in Montgomery on Sept. 9. Thompson broke her own overall school record at 18:32.96, while Hanson established a personal-best time of 18:56.52.

Thompson and Hanson powered Fairmont to a total of 202 to place sixth in the 20-team divisional bracket.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Natasha Sortland posted a time of 18:30.7 to win the Division 3 gold medal in the individual competition, while St. Cloud Cathedral won the bracket’s team championship at 52.

“I think having a great runner like (Sortland) in front of them really helped motivate both Laura and Macy to run faster times Saturday,” said Bonk. “That’s the nature of the beast when it comes to this sport.”

Carys Gudahl crossed the finish line in 22:26.7 to net 52nd place among team competitors to place third on the Cardinals, while Eleanor Hamlet delivered 67th place with a time of 22:52.5. Audrina Suckow rounded out Fairmont’s counting scores by taking 80th in 23:31.0.

Emma Gudahl placed 86th team-wise with a mark of 23:41.8, while Lily Higgins produced a personal-best time of 25:22.0 to net 111th out of the 156-runner field.

“After our top two, we’re pretty spread out right now, but the girls are working hard to cut the gap,” said Bonk. “It’s an on-going process, and the girls are working hard and doing their best, and that’s all you can ask for.”

In the Division 3 boys’ race, both Will Niestrath and Cooper Gudahl produced personal-best times to guide Fairmont to 15th place out of the 24-team field with a score of 384.

Ironically, Niestrath matched his exact lowest time by running the 5K course in 18:43.8 to collect 50th place teamwise, while Cooper Gudahl established a new personal-best by crossing the finish line in 19:16.7 to net 80th in the team competition and third on the Cardinals’ roster.

Gavin Artner claimed Fairmont’s No. 2 spot by generating a time of 18:56.6 to pocket 62nd place, while Brier Lenort and Ben Moeller rounded out the counting scores in 95th and 97th, respectively. Lenort covered the 5K distance in 19:46.8, while Moeller finished in 19:51.2. Landon Weber completed the Cardinals’ effort in 145th in 21:17.1.

“When your top boys runners are all sophomores and eighth-graders, you don’t really expect to be in the upper portion of a race the size of Milaca,” said Bonk. “Over half of the team had never run there before, and to see the look of awe in their eyes when they saw the number of other runners competing was interesting.

“Our guys continue to improve with each meet, so I’m pretty pleased with that.”

Blake’s Shef West won the Division 3 boys individual crown with a time of 16:03.6, while Perham pocketed the team championship with a score of 96.

In the Division 4 boys race, Jamesson Forsberg produced the 10th-best overall and seventh-best team competition time of 17:15.4 to pace Martin County West’s score of 408. The Mavericks netted 18th out of the 26-team divisional field.

Grant Koehnen posted a time of 18:51.6 to net 47th teamwise for MCW, while teammate Riley Cole finished 60th by crossing the finish line in 19:13.4.

Nick Matejka and Connor Pope rounded out the Mavericks’ counting marks at Milaca by taking 139th (22:03.9) and 156th (24:01.0), respectively.

Milbank’s Nick Batchelor won the 195-runner Division 4 boys run in 16:01.5, while Parnassus Prep School collected the team title at 92.

In the Division 4 girls’ race, Katie Hartke generated the 12th-best overall individual time of 20:07.3 to top MCW, which was one runner short of competing for team honors.

Katelynn Kennedy garnered 79th overall with a 5K time of 23:50.3 for the Mavericks, Sydney Borntrager claimed 103rd in 24:38.8, while Liz Peterson placed 107th with a time of 24:54.7.

Nevis’ Jade Rypkema won the Division 4 girls individual crown in 18:53.4.

Fairmont runs in the St. James Area Invitational at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday on the St. James High School’s campus, while Martin County West travels to Slayton on Tuesday to compete in the Murray County Central Invite.
