The Kansas State Wildcats (5-6-0) faced a tough Texas Tech Red Raiders (9-1-1) team in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday. The Red Raiders continued their impressive home-winning streak (8-0) with a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats.
“I thought we played a good game, it’s just, in the big moments or key moments of the game, we cut ourselves or dig ourselves another hole,” K-State head coach Mike Dibbini said to K-State Athletics.
K-State’s defensive effort held the Red Raiders to only four shots on goal in the first half. However, the Wildcats finished the half with only one shot on goal.
Two of those Red Raiders’ shots on goal found their way to the netting, including an early goal by forward Kirsten Davis on the first shot attempt of the match (5:04) from just outside the 18-yard box.
In the 17th minute of the match, Texas Tech had an opportunity to make it 2-0, but K-State goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer got a finger on the assist attempt to disrupt the header.

Then, the Wildcats suffered a loss when sophomore defender, Erin Morrissey, was struck in the head by a cross-kick in the 32nd minute. She was out for the rest of the match, and the Red Raiders capitalized on the loss.
Texas Tech’s Ashleigh Williams dribbled around two Wildcat defenders to score her eighth goal (34:36) of the season. The ball was kicked from beyond the 18-yard box, zooming by the Wildcat goalkeeper to find the bottom-left post for a second Red Raider goal.
The second half was more competitive than the first half as K-State finished with 11 more shot attempts and had the advantage in shots on goal (4-3).
Two K-State shots on goals were attempted by midfielder Adah Anderson, a career-high for the freshman.
“She has a really high IQ to make plays for us, especially in the big moments, so her upside is extremely high and we’re excited about what she’s going to continue to do for us,” Dibbini said.
Despite the aggressive second half, Texas Tech was able to shut out the Wildcats.
“We have got to figure out ways to continue to get better, but we played a really good game,” Dibbini said. “We just did it against a really good opponent and they capitalized on their chances and we just couldn’t do the same.”
K-State hopes to advance its rivalry record against Kansas (1-3) to two wins in the Sunflower Showdown in Lawrence at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30. The game is viewable on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
