NORMAN – Brett Squires and Conor McKenna homered and Jimmy Crooks notched three hits, but Oklahoma came up short in a thrilling Bedlam Big 12 baseball series finale, falling 8-7 in 12 innings to No. 18 Oklahoma State Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

OU clinched its first Bedlam conference series win since 2016 with a 16-2 victory Friday night in Stillwater, Okla., and a 5-3 win on Saturday at Mitchell Park.

The Sooners (22-20, 6-9 Big 12) and Cowboys (25-14-1, 8-10 Big 12) battled on Sunday through a back-and-forth affair in which the game was tied for a total of five frames after the fifth inning.

Squires led off the bottom of the second inning with his third home run of the series to tie the game 1-1 after OSU scored in the top of the first. McKenna then blasted a three-run homer with two outs in the second to put the Sooners in front 4-1.

After the Cowboys went ahead 5-4 in the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Caeden Trenkle, OU tied it 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Breydon Daniel drew a leadoff walk and scored on base hit up the middle by Crooks.

The teams remained tied for two scoreless innings before Oklahoma took the lead again with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Crooks hit a leadoff single and scored on an error, and Brandon Zaragoza hit an RBI single to give OU a 7-5 lead.

With the bases loaded and a full count to Zaragoza, Crooks raced home when the throw back to the mound went wild toward second base. He was ruled safe after an official review, and tension erupted into cheers from the crimson-clad fans. Zaragoza then delivered a line drive base hit to left field, scoring Diego Muniz.

OSU, however, tied the game with two runs in the top of the ninth on an error and a base hit by Carson McCusker, and took an 8-7 lead in the top of the 12th on a pop up single by Brock Mathis that fell in left center field.

The Sooners put the leadoff runner on base in the 10th (walk by Squires) and 11th innings (single by McKenna).

Luke Taggart pitched 4.1 shutout innings in relief of starter Braden Carmichael, striking out seven batters and allowing just two hits and one walk. He faced one batter in the fourth, starting a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning, then retired 11 of the next 14 batters before giving way to Ledgend Smith who ended the eighth with a strikeout. Jaret Godman (0-2) pitched 3.0 innings, mowing down six straight batters in the 10th and 11th frames. Kale Davis (1-2) pitched the final 4.1 innings for OSU in the win.

Oklahoma returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference game against Texas Tech in Amarillo, Texas. The contest, which was rescheduled from April 20, is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
