CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 15 NC State baseball (29-16) fought tooth and nail with North Carolina (27-25) on Friday night in its final pool play game of the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at Truist Field in Charlotte, N.C., but came up short with a 9-6 loss.

Despite facing an eight-run deficit after two innings, the Wolfpack battled back with runs in the third, fourth and eighth innings to put itself on the cusp of winning the game.

NC State out-hit the Tar Heels, 13-10, thanks to multi-hit outings from Austin Murr (3-for-5), Tyler McDonough (3-for-4), Jose Torres (2-for-5) and Vojtech Mensik (2-for-5).

Additionally, freshman pitchers Coby Ingle and John Miralia shined as the pair combined for six shutout innings. Ingle went a career-long four innings and fanned a career-high four batters, and Miralia tossed a career-best two innings.

The Heels started off hot with six runs in the first inning on a David Serretti RBI single, Mac Horvath grand slam and wild pitch, then added two more in the second on Horvath's single through the left side with runners at the corners and Tomas Frick's RBI double down the left field line.

NC State cut into its deficit in the third with three runs on four hits. Vojtech Mensik and J.T. Jarrett both singled to start the side, and with runners at the corners Mensik scored on an RBI fielder's choice. With the bases loaded on one out, Terrell Tatum walked in the second run and Torres drove in the third with a single to center field.

Carolina tacked on a run in the fourth to make it 9-3 when Caleb Roberts crossed home plate on a sac fly to right field, but the Pack responded in the bottom frame when McDonough delivered with a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Murr after he singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.

After three quiet innings, the Pack surged back in the eighth with a pair of runs on four hits to make it 9-6. Brown and Mensik led off the side with outfield singles, and then a single by Murr followed by a double by McDonough plated the runs.

In the ninth, Torres tried to continue the momentum from the previous inning as he led off with a single up the middle, but the Tar Heels managed to get three outs and escape with the win.

NC State will now turn its attention to its ACC Championship semifinal matchup with Georgia Tech Saturday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Truist Field, and the game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
