WILMINGTON, N.C. – Joe Savino held tournament host UNCW to one earned run through 7.1 innings, but Elon University baseball fell 2-0 on Thursday night, May 27 at UNCW's Brooks Field.
ON THE MOUND
Savino allowed two runs on five hits and two walks. He added eight strikeouts and drops to 0-3 with the loss. Joe Sprake pitched 0.2 innings and recorded one strikeout.
AT THE PLATE
Anthony Galason finished 2-for-3 with two of Elon's three hits on the night. Cole Reynolds collected the team's other hit in a 1-for-3 outing, while Cassella drew the lone walk for the Phoenix (22-21).
THE RUNDOWN
A pitcher's duel between Savino and UNCW's Landen Roupp, the second-seeded Seahawks (31-20) broke through with one run in the home half of the fourth inning. After Matt Suggs drew a leadoff walk, Cole Weiss laid down a bunt. An Elon error allowed Weiss to reach first, and Suggs moved up to third. The Phoenix then turned a 4-6-3 double play, but Suggs came home to put the tournament hosts in front, 1-0.
UNCW looked to add to its lead in the sixth as Suggs started off the frame with a double down the left-field line. He would steal third, but Savino struck out the next three batters to keep it a 1-0 deficit. Elon had an opportunity in the top of the eighth as Reynolds led off with a single through the right side and took second on a Garrett Stonehouse sacrifice bunt. Griffin Arnone then entered as a pinch runner, but Parker Haskin went down swinging and Matt Oldham struck out looking.
In the bottom of the eighth, Brooks Baldwin reached on a fielding error by Justin Cassella. He then advanced to second on a Trevor Marsh sac bunt and reached third on a Suggs ground out. A wild pitch then allowed Baldwin to touch home and push the Seahawks lead to 2-0.
NOTES
- Elon finished the night 3-for-28 (.107).
- Savino's 7.1 innings pitched mark a new career high.
- Savino and Sprake posted a 65.2 strike percentage with 73-of-112 pitches over the plate.
- It was a complete-game shutout for Roupp.
- Iadisernia's reached base streak comes to an end at 28 games.
- Galason pushed his hit streak to 10 games.
