CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball team was topped, 5-2, by Indiana State in the MVC Tournament on Wednesday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The Redbirds (23-33 overall) will face eighth-seeded Valparaiso at 10:00 a.m. CT on Thursday in an elimination game.
Fifth-year senior Joe Butler had three hits while fourth-year junior Tyson Hays added two hits. Second-year freshman Ryan Cermak hit a solo home run as the Redbirds generated seven hits.
Indiana State (28-17 overall) moves on to face the winner of Southern Illinois and Bradley.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Joe Butler singled home Hays in the 2nd inning but Indiana State hit a two-run shot to lead 2-1 after two innings.
Bats went cold until the bottom of the 7th inning when Indiana State added two runs. The Sycamores added another insurance run in the 8th inning to lead 5-1.
Cermak hit a solo shot to left-center for the second-consecutive game, but the Redbirds could not get the tying run to the plate.

- Each team walked just one time.
- Fourth-year junior Kyle Soberano recorded seven putouts and six assists at second base. The seven putouts are the most by a Redbird infielder (non-1B) since Dennis Colon at seven at shortstop on 5/3/2014. The six assists are the most by a Redbird in an MVC Tournament game since Colon had six on 5/21/2015.
- The Redbirds turned four double plays, their most since 3/11/2014 vs Bowling Green. Four is the most in the MVC Tournament for ISU since at least 2000.

Illinois State is scheduled to face eighth-seeded Valparaiso at 10:00 a.m. CT on Thursday. A win and the 'Birds would play on Friday at 10:00 a.m. CT. A loss ends the Redbirds' season. The game is on ESPN+.
