CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Under the lights in game three of the 2021 ACC Tournament, North Carolina (26-25) fell 5-3 to Pittsburgh (23-19) to open pool play on Tuesday evening.
After a scoreless first inning, Pittsburgh took the first lead of the game in the second frame on a fielder's choice. After two Panthers drew walks and advanced on a wild pitch, Pittsburgh plated the game's first run on a groundball to first base.
The Panthers added two more runs in the fifth inning when, after a single and a double, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly extended the lead to 3-0.
The Tar Heels' offense broke through in the fifth inning when Caleb Roberts worked a 3-2 count for a single to center field, which scored Tomas Frick and Angel Zarate, who previously reached on a pair of singles.
Pittsburgh led off the sixth inning with a triple, but after a strikeout from Nik Pry, Roberts threw out the runner that attempted to tag up from third to end the inning. The play from the right fielder was his fifth assist of the season.
Pry was electric in the seventh inning, as he struck out the side and had collected four punchouts in the first eight batters he faced.
In the eighth, Pitt took a three-run lead with a two-run blast to left-center.
The home half of the eighth featured two Tar Heels on base to lead off the inning when Roberts was hit by a pitch and Danny Serretti drew a walk. With one out, Centracchio drew the second walk of the inning and loaded the bases. Frick drove in a run with an RBI groundout and cut the Panther lead to two.
Zarate drew a one-out walk in the ninth and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded there, and the Tar Heels fell by a three-run deficit.
Shawn Rapp was impressive out of the bullpen for Carolina and threw two hitless, scoreless innings. He added a trio of punchouts.
Zarate led Carolina at the plate with his 14th multi-hit game of the season.
The Tar Heels return to the diamond on Friday to finish pool play against NC State at 7 p.m.
