HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Despite two first-inning runs, the Hofstra University softball team dropped a mid-week non-conference tilt to Fordham University on Wednesday, April 13 by a 3-2 margin at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Four Pride hitters recorded a hit on the night, with Chelsea Manto, Kasey Collins, Aliya Catanzarita, and Devyn Losco notching singles. Sam Ward tallied the lone RBI on the evening for Hofstra.
In the circle, Haley Venturini made the start and tossed 2.1 innings. Annabella Pisapia spun 4.2 solid innings in relief, allowing just three hits while striking out three.
Following a scoreless top of the first, Manto led off the game for Hofstra with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Collins. A Ram miscue in the field allowed the Pride to plate the game's first run, and one batter later Ward drove home Meghan Giordano with a sacrifice fly to center field. Fordham's Bailey Enoch settled in after the two-run opening frame, scattering just three hits over the next five innings, holding Hofstra scoreless.
The Rams cut the deficit in half during the second inning when Amanda Carey hit a one-out home run to right field. An inning later, the Rams pushed two more runs across to take a 3-2 lead.
Hofstra's bats picked up in the seventh inning when Catanzarita led off the final at-bat with a pinch-hit single and Kayla Wilson followed with a walk to put the winning run on base as Makenzie McGrath came on in relief to attempt to earn the save for Fordham. McGrath allowed just one baserunner but a running catch by second baseman Allie Clark in shallow right field ended the game and kept Hofstra off the board.
Hofstra is back in action at Bill Edwards Stadium this Friday, April 15 for a doubleheader against UNCW. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
