POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar College baseball team scored 13 consecutive runs to earn a come-from-behind, 13-6, victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Sunday afternoon at Prentiss Field. With the win, the Brewers improve to 12-18 overall (4-10 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 12-14 (4-8 Liberty League).
RPI broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on two hits and four Brewers errors. Senior Jack Moncur delivered the big blow in the inning, plating two with a double to left. Joe Curci followed by reaching on an error, which brought home the third run.
Vassar answered by scoring 13 runs over the next four frames, including five in the sixth and four in the eighth. Alex Warren had a two-run triple to highlight the big sixth inning for the hosts, while Adam Talwalkar homered in both the seventh and eighth innings, launching a grand slam to account for all four Brewers runs in the eighth.
The Engineers fought back with a three-run top of the ninth, but could not climb any closer than seven runs.
Frankie Murphy (1-1) picked up the win on the hill, giving up just two hits over 3.0 innings of relief. He struck out four and walked three. RPI starter Alex Vallee took a no-decision on the day, allowing three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings, picking up four strikeouts and one walk.
RPI is back on the diamond on Wednesday, when it heads to Clarkson for a make-up doubleheader (TBA). The Brewers host Mount Saint Vincent for a non-league game on Wednesday (4pm).
