The biggest news of the week was Oscar Tshiebwe announcing he's returning to Kentucky next season, making him the first Naismith National Player of the Year to return to school since North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough did it in 2008. It's a massive development for the Wildcats and college basketball in general, as we discussed on the latest episode of the Eye On College Basketball Podcast. But Tshiebwe's decision has no impact on the 2022-23 CBS Sports Preseason Top 25 And 1 because the 6-foot-9 forward has always been projected as a part of Kentucky's roster next season.
Johnny Juzang's decision is different, though.
Since Version 1.0 of the Top 25 And 1, Juzang has been projected to return to UCLA for his senior season. But the 6-foot-7 guard announced Wednesday that he's leaving Westwood to pursue a professional career, which means the Bruins are losing their leading scorer from a team that made the Sweet 16 of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
Will they still be good?
Yes, I think so.
Because of Juzang's departure, though, I've dropped UCLA from No. 1 to No. 7 in Version 5.0 of the Top 25 And 1 — which means North Carolina is the new No. 1 based on the idea that every meaningful player (besides Brady Manek) from the team that just played Kansas in the national title game will return to Chapel Hill. Armando Bacot and Leaky Black have already said they will. That leaves Caleb Love as the main Tar Heel who hasn't yet announced his intentions. But considering there's no guarantee he would even be selected if he entered the 2022 NBA Draft, the expectation remains that he'll be back at UNC next season.
