FAIRMONT–

Martin County Humane Society’s annual Walk for Animals event will take place beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Cedar Creek Park in Fairmont. This year, there’s a twist: a family carnival will follow the walk.

“We decided to do something different to try to pull more people in,” said Cindilee Connor, president of the Humane Society.

This will be the 27th year the walk has taken place. Last year’s event was scaled back due to Covid, but Connor said they still saw good attendance.

“We’re hoping that by combining it with the carnival, even more people will show up and we can raise awareness for what we do.”

Connor said those who raise $25 or more in pledges will get a free T-shirt and a free meal following the walk.

“You don’t need a dog to walk but if you want to bring one that’s great,” she said.

The carnival will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. There will be a bouncy house, ring toss, pond duckies and face painting.

“We’ll have canvases where you can put your hand and if you bring a dog, your dog’s paw in safe paint, and you can put it on a canvas as a keepsake,” Connor said.

Tickets can be purchased to be used toward games and crafts. A meal consisting of a hotdog, chips, beverage and a bar will also be available.

The Walk for Animals serves as one of the Humane Society’s biggest fundraisers. All of the money raised will go toward operating expenses, which Connor said is a lot. She said each year they bring in anywhere between 600 and 800 animals, which are then put up for adoption. They’re all completely vetted locally and up to date when they leave.

Connor shared that the Humane Society has another fundraiser coming up on Sept. 18, which will be a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fleet & Farm in Fairmont.

“We’re also always looking for good volunteers to come during our open hours to walk dogs and play with kitties. And we’re in need of volunteers to help participate in fundraisers and get them going,” she said.

The Humane Society is open Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
