NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's soccer team was edged by Northwestern after the Wildcats netted a 99th-minute golden goal on Thursday evening at Adelaide Street Field in front of 351 fans.
Junior Katherine Felton put the Redbirds (1-6 overall) up, 1-0, with a 52nd-minute goal, assisted by junior Allison Baker and sophomore Caitlin Shilling.
Shilling played a ball from the left side that Baker kept alive, finding the feet of Felton, whose right-footed shot beat the Northwestern keeper from 15 yards out.
The Wildcats (3-3 overall) broke through in the 76th minute to tie the match at 1-1 before scoring the golden goal with 1:06 to play in the first overtime.
Redshirt junior Priya Gillan, coming off a career-high nine saves against Milwaukee, recorded six saves in goal.
NW held a robust 11-0 advantage in corner kicks and a 19-7 margin in shots.
The Redbirds snapped a three-match shutout streak but extended its losing streak to six matches, tying the program's longest such streak (lost four-straight to close 1997, two-straight to start 1998).
The match marked the first time in school history that the 'Birds have hosted three Power Five schools in the same season after previously hosting the Big Ten's Illinois and the PAC-12's Utah.
Illinois State is scheduled to face Northern Illinois on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. CT.
