EUGENE — A battle of bullpens went to Stanford in Oregon’s final regular season home game.

The No. 7 Ducks led 5-0 after three innings but were blanked for the final nine frames by Jacob Palisch and Joey Dixon, who each retired 11 straight batters, while the No. 15 Cardinal rallied to send the game to extras. Christian Robinson went 3 for 6 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the 12th to give Stanford an 8-5 win to clinch the series Sunday afternoon at PK Park.

“It was a heavyweight fight all weekend long and it feels like it right now,” Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski said. “It was two very good baseball teams teeing off on each other and they came out on top today. It’s disappointing. Proud of my ballclub, not disappointed whatsoever in them. Disappointed in the results for sure and obviously we are still a program trying to learn how to win and learn how to win big games and we didn’t do that today.”

Conversely, UO closer Kolby Somers made his longest appearance in over two years and after giving up just two hits over the 9th, 10th and 11th innings, he couldn’t keep Stanford off the board again in the 12th.

A leadoff single and pair of wild pitches put a runner on third with one out, then Kody Huff delivered a two-out RBI single to left to put the Cardinal ahead for the first time. Robinson, who drove in Stanford’s first first in the fourth, followed with a blast into the visiting bullpen.

Wasikowski said he didn’t consider turning to Hunter Breault to start the 12th instead of Somers, who made his longest appearance since a 5.2-inning start against USC on May 19, 2019.

“Kolby wanted the ball,” Wasikowski said. “It’s senior day, he wanted the ball (and) had his best bullets. He felt strong and he’s a horse. He felt strong. His best bullets were in that inning. He was up to 93-94 in that inning.”

Aaron Zavala and Josh Kasevich were each 2 for 5 with two RBIs for Oregon (35-12, 18-8 Pac-12), which can no longer win the Pac-12 outright after Arizona rallied to beat Oregon State. The Ducks can still earn a share of the conference title win a sweep at Cal next weekend.

Kasevich got the scoring started with an RBI groundout with the bases loaded in the first. Zavala hit a two-run single in the second, Kasevich led off the third with his fourth home run of the season and Tanner Smith latter added a two-out RBI double to put Oregon up 5-0.

Brett Walker allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk and struck out two over 5.1 innings in a no-decision and Caleb Sloan gave up a run on two hits and a walk over 0.2 innings for UO.

After giving up the double to Smith, Palisch retired the next 11 Oregon batters until a one-out single in the seventh. The Cardinal (30-13, 14-9 Pac-12) then turned to Dixon (2-0), who got a double play to get out of a runners on the corners with one out jam in the seventh and bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth. He allowed just two hits and two walks over the final 5.2 innings and retired UO’s last 11 hitters.

“I think both of those kids did a tremendous job, I will tip my hat to them,” Wasikowski said. “I’d like to think that we’re a better offense than that. When you basically go 9.1 innings with four hits, that’s what it comes down to and that’s not the offense that we’ve had year long. Being out of character is something we need to address. Hopefully our young people understand we were out of character and we can work on the things that are going to keep us in character in a big game.”
