It isn't just Jarred Kelenic time for the M's. They're calling up right-hander Logan Gilbert, their top pitching prospect, and he's likely to start tomorrow, sources tell ESPN.
Big stuff happening in Seattle, where Kelenic, Gilbert and eventually Julio Rodriguez will be staples.

Logan Gilbert, the Mariners’ first-round pick in 2018 and MLB Pipeline’s #28 prospect in all of baseball, is getting The Call. Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, he will join fellow wunderkind prospect Jarred Kelenic in debuting tomorrow evening against the Cleveland baseball club.
For years now, ever since trading Robinson Canó and Edwin Díaz to the New York Mets in the fall of 2018, general manager Jerry Dipoto has placed his faith in rebuilding the minor league system. The club has pulled out all the stops in centering the team’s future on its star prospects, talking them up every chance they get and finding ways to promote this next wave. This moment — this debut of two ballyhooed prospects — is what Dipoto & Co. have been building toward, and their grand experiment gets big-league exposure beginning on Thursday.
Gilbert, a 6’6” righty out of Stetson University, has a grand total of 27 minor league starts, with 26 of them coming in 2019 across the A-ball West Virginia Power, A+-ball Modesto Nuts, and AA-ball Arkansas Travelers. Last week, he made his Tacoma debut, allowing one run and striking out five across 5 IP. His four-pitch repertoire is headlined by his fastball, which touches 97 MPH, and two breaking pitches.
We’ve spent plenty of time talking about Gilbert in the past, from Kate Preusser’s interview with him in 2019 to the “Truth Meeting” Gilbert had with fellow prospect Cal Raleigh later that same year. As long ago as last fall, we had a staff roundtable to discuss whether it was time to call Gilbert up (along with Jarred, of course).
His call-up now may remind Mariners fans of other prospects who were rushed to the majors to fill a need, and it’s fair to question whether there are other — and better — options to help this team at or above .500. But based on performance and scouting, Gilbert appears ready. And Mariners fans are certainly ready to see the hype for themselves. Tomorrow, at T-Mobile Park, they’ll have the chance to do just that.
