— A Raleigh man was shot in the leg after a homeowner told police he thought the man was breaking into his home.

It started at 2 p.m. on Teravista Way Saturday afternoon, a sight Collins Clarkson never thought he'd see.

"I looked out the window and saw a guy, like, chasing another guy around a car. And then heard a couple of gunshots," said Clarkson.

According to police, one of those men was Clarkson's neighbor.

The other was a man who also lives in the Highland Creek community, apparently in the middle of a mental health crisis.

"It was pretty scary," said Clarkson

The Raleigh Police Department said the man having that crisis chose this house at random and tried to break in.

The homeowner, Clarkson's neighbor, was inside with his wife, kids and grandmother at the time.

He grabbed a gun and told the man to leave.

Police say that's when the man began attacking the homeowner before the homeowner shot the him in the leg.

"That stuff normally doesn't happen, or doesn't happen at all, in this neighborhood," said Clarkson.

Police say the man will recover from his injuries, but will likely face breaking and entering, and assault charges.

But why this happened in the first place, has left police and neighbors searching for answers.

"Lot of kids that live out here. Never really had any issues like this before," said Clarkson.
