Despite the loss, CSUB will return to Bakersfield with its head held high after finishing the regular season with an 18-10 record, the program's highest win percentage (.643) in Director of Volleyball Giovana Melo's seven competitive seasons. The `Runners also posted an 11-9 Big West Conference record, placing fourth in the league standings after the Preseason Coaches Poll slated CSUB to finish in ninth place. Bakersfield will now await a potential postseason invitation.
"Tonight's match was definitely a disappointing way to finish what was a great season," said Melo, reflecting on the last 28 matches. "I am extremely happy and proud of the strides we took as a program. These girls wanted to be good, they invested in their personal relationships on and off the court, and consequently became a really good volleyball team. They were definitely fun to coach. I am excited for the future of our program."
On the evening, Bakersfield received standout performances from a pair of `Runners. Possibly playing in her final match as a `Runner, middle blocker Brooke Boiseau paced the CSUB offense with 10 kills on .222 hitting. From the back row, junior libero Paige Calvin averaged 5.0 digs per set on the night while adding three assists and an ace to her 15 digs.
Bakersfield earned a 13-10 advantage in the opening set, but a 12-1 run put the Anteaters in control. UCI went on to take the opening set, 25-16.
CSUB held a slim lead early on, but a 9-0 run by Irvine helped the Anteaters grab hold of the second set, 15-9. From an 18-13 UCI advantage, Bakersfield answered back with a 6-1 run to pull within one point. The `Runners fought all the way to the end of the game, but UCI earned a 25-23 win in Set 2 to take a 2-0 lead on the match.
The Anteaters came out swinging hard in the opening set, taking a 9-0 lead straight out of the break. The `Runners battled to trade points after that, but the early advantage was too much to overcome and Bakersfield fell, 25-11.
