Pensacola, FL. - After coming back from being down two sets to none in the first game of the day, the Wheeling University Volleyball team (1-2) couldn't rekindle that magic in game two. They ended up falling to Palm Beach Atlantic University 3-1 and split their two contests on the second day of the West Florida Invitational.

Early on, it was Palm Beach Atlantic's dominant offensive attack that ruled the first set as they had a hitting percentage of .500, recording 19 kills on 34 total attacks. They were placing the ball well, and Wheeling's defenders had a hard time getting to them. Wheeling would add 13 kills on 29 total attacks, but it wasn't enough as they dropped the first set 25-20.

Down 1-0 for the third time in the West Florida Tournament, Wheeling was looking to conjure up some of the magic from earlier in the day. It worked in the second set's Wheeling knocked down 15 total attacks, and outhit Palm Beach Atlantic with a hitting percentage of .323. Atlantic Palm Beach would end up committing seven errors, and Wheeking took advantage to secure a commanding 25-19 victory and get the momentum back on their side.

With the match tied at 1-1, it looked like things were about to kick into high gear for Wheeling, and they almost did. The Cardinals battled Palm Beach Atlantic back she forth for the entire third set as the team's put up nearly identical kill numbers. The score was tied 24-24 late in the set, and the team's continued to trade the first points of the win-by-two-scenario. However, Palm Beach Atlantic found their swing and recorded the final two points to win the set 27-25.

Wheeling was on the ropes again and needed to pull off a fourth set win to stay alive and force a fifth and final set. However, the attack opportunities just weren't there as Wheeling was out hit 19 kills to nine in that set. It was Palm Beach Atlantic that would pull out the magic touch and win the final set 25-21. They took the match 3-1 and ended Wheeling's day on a sour note.

Senior Kayla Bekier (Northwood, OH./Lake HS) continued her dominance on the offensive side of the ball, with 18 kills on the day. Senior Audrey Francis (Sidney, OH./Fairlawn) led the defense with 29 digs while Karly Niesen (Cincinnati, OH./Roger Bacon) had a team-high 45 assists.

The Wheeling Volleyball team wraps up their run at the West Florida Invitational tomorrow morning when they play Spring Hill College at 10:00 AM.
