NDSU Volleyball Wraps Up Play at Portland State Tournament - NDSU - NDSU Bison Athletics

PORTLAND, Ore.  –  The North Dakota State volleyball team wrapped up play at the Portland State Tournament coming up short against Gonzaga, 3-0, before dropping a 3-2 decision to Portland State on Saturday night at Viking Pavilion.

In the first match of the day, Gonzaga opened the contest controlling the pace creating a 20-11 edge late in the first set. NDSU then settled in assembling a momentum-swinging 9-1 run to cut the deficit down to one, 21-20, following an attack error. However, the Bulldogs held off the Bison the rest of the way to take the first set, 25-23. Four different Bison connected on at least two kills in the set with Ali Hinze notching a team-best three.

Gonzaga once again started fast doubling up NDSU, 6-3, early in the second stanza. The Bison pulled their way back within one, 20-19, with three straight points capped by a kill from Michelle Glover. The Bulldogs answered with three straight points of their own to stretch their lead back up to 23-19. Gonzaga won the second set, 25-22.

After the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the third set, NDSU attempted to get a rally going after three straight points highlighted by a service ace from Alexis Boling. The Bison couldn't cut the lead down any further and went on to drop the frame, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.

Syra Tanchin paced the Bison with a team-high 11 kills, while Ava Schmoll chipped in a season-high and match-best 12 digs. Kelley Johnson rounded out the top performers with a team-high 31 assists to go along with six digs.

In the second match of the day against Portland State, both teams exchanged points in a first frame that saw 13 ties and four lead changes until Kaylee Hanger ignited the Bison offense with back-to-back service aces to create a 22-20 advantage. NDSU closed the frame 4-2 run with kills from Hinze and Tanchin to win the opening set, 26-24.

The Bison started fast in the second stanza doubling up the Vikings, 6-3, following a kill from Hinze. NDSU kept momentum rolling increasing its lead up to 21-13 after a solo block from Glover. The Bison, who never trailed in the frame, took the set, 25-20.

Portland State battled back in the third frame opening up 10-2 lead. The Bison attempted to get a comeback started after three straight points to pull within six, 15-9, but couldn't cut the edge down any further and dropped the frame, 25-15.

The Vikings continued to control the pace into the fourth set sprinting out to a 15-4 lead. Tanchin was able to slow the run following a kill for NDSU to make the score 15-5. The Vikings went to take the set, 25-14, and force a deciding fifth frame.  

Both teams continued to battle deep into the fifth set that featured 11 ties and three lead changes. After the Bison stole the lead, 13-12, following a block from Boling and Johnson, Portland State closed the set on a 3-0 run to secure the set, 15-13, and the match, 3-2.

Johnson paced the Bison registering her first double-double of the season with a team-high 43 assists and 12 digs. Hinze also added in her sixth double-double of the season with a team-high 19 kills and 11 digs. Hanger led the way on the defensive end contributing a team-best 16 digs.

NDSU (6-6), who played the first 12 matches of the season on the road, returns to action for its first home contest and Summit League opener against Kansas City on Thursday. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
