FAIRFAX, Va. (Sept. 10, 2021)-Morgan State opened up the George Mason Invitational with a 3-1 loss (25-11, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21) to Robert Morris on Friday afternoon at the Recreational Athletic Complex on the George Mason campus.
 
It was the first contest between the two programs since meeting five years ago on this very day in the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament hosted by the University of Maryland Baltimore County (9/10/16). The Colonials would win that contest in three sets.
 
Robert Morris (6-2) improved to 8-3 all-time against Morgan State with the win, while the Lady Bears fell to 0-9 on the season.
 
Despite the slow start through the first two sets, Morgan State had several players put up season best numbers. Madison Grace led the Lady Bears with a season-best and match-high 16 kills, while Makila Billingsley added 10. Jadore Hayes collected a match-high and season-best 22 digs and Mackenzie Jefferson finished with a match- and season-high 30 assists.
 
The Colonials finished the match with 48 kills and hit .311 as a team, including a set-best .450 in the first set. Annie Monaco led RMU with 15 kills and hit a match-best .542. Ashleigh Wallin had a team-high 23 assists, while Allena Carmody and Abby Ryan each had 15 digs to lead Robert Morris.
 
The Lady Bears finished with 42 kills and hit for .103 for the contest. Morgan State had a match-best 56 digs with Gabriela Hiciano reaching double figures with 13.
 
RMU had a 13.0-4.0 blocking advantage over the Lady Bears with Page Gross leading the way with seven assisted blocks. Morgan State's Melanie Battle recorded three blocks, including one solo.
 
How it happened
 
Set 1
Robert Morris recorded 10 kills in the opening set to hit .450 as a team, while holding Morgan State to six kills and a hitting percentage of -0.125. The Colonials scored five straight points to trigger a 9-1 run to extend an 8-6 lead into a 17-7 advantage. RMU would close out the set with a 7-2 spurt to earn a 25-11 victory.
 
Set 2
Morgan State took a quick 3-0 lead, but fell behind 16-12. The Patriots closed out the set on a 9-2 run to win 25-14. The Lady Bears finished with seven kills, but had eight errors to hit -0.029 in the set. RMU hit .258 with 12 kills on 31 attempts with four attack errors.
 
Set 3
The Colonials scored seven straight to take a 7-1 lead. Morgan State would score five straight to trigger an 8-1 spurt, capped off with an ace by Alyssa Sampson to give the Lady Bears a 10-9 lead. Morgan State's lead grew to 15-12, forcing RMU to call a timeout. A cross court kill by Hiciano gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the set (five points) at 21-16. RMU would use a 7-3 run to cut the deficit to 24-23 and force a Morgan State timeout. The Lady Bears would come out of the timeout and get a kill from Grace to give Morgan a 25-23 win.
 
Set 4
Morgan State came out strong, scoring the first seven points, which included three straight aces by Jefferson, as Robert Morris was forced to call timeout. After getting an earful from its coach, the Colonials took advantage of a service error by the Lady Bears and scored 12 of the next 15 points to take a 12-10 lead. From that point on the score would be tied six times with the last one coming at 19 all, following a service error on Morgan. The Colonials proceeded to score four consecutive points to take a 23-19 advantage. MSU scored two points to pull within 23-21, but the Colonials ended the set scoring the next two points to earn the 25-21 set victory and match win.
