Holland, Mich., September 15, 2021– The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team fell on the road 1-0 in non-conference play at Hope College on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss marks the first defeat for the Bears this season, as they drop to 4-1 on the year. Hope improves to 3-1 on the year with the victory.

WashU had multiple good looks on goal in the opening half but were unable to finish as shots from Sergio Rivas, John Daniels, and Owen Culver were saved by Hope's goalkeeper.

Hope fired off three shots-on-goal in the final four minutes of the half, but Matt Martin and the Bears' defense held off the Flying Dutchmen as both teams went into halftime even at 0-0.

The scoreless tie ended early in the second half after Hope scored in the 50th minute to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Bears' first shot of the second half did not come until the 61st minute, following another shot attempt from Culver which was saved.

Trying to find the equalizer, WashU launched five shot attempts in the final 7:40 of play, but were ultimately unable to find the back of the net.

WashU recorded 16 shots throughout the match with six shots landing on target.

Owen Culver led the Bears with a team-best five shots and placed three shots-on-goal, while Sergio Rivas registered two shots-on-goal.

Goalkeeper Matt Martin logged nine saves on the day, giving him 20 total saves for the season.

The Bears are back in action at home on Saturday against Wheaton at 11:00 a.m. at Francis Olympic Field.
