DAVIS, Calif. – California volleyball came up short in the final non-conference match of the season, falling 16-25, 13-25, 25-20, 14-25 to UC Davis Thursday at the University Credit Union Center.
The Bears dropped to 7-4 on the season with the defeat and UC Davis improved to 4-6.
Mima Mirkovic led Cal with eight kills and 10 digs, while Katie Smoot recorded a team-high 16 digs. Sydney Lilomaiava added six kills and Bella Bergmark had five.
How It Happened:
The Aggies used a 7-0 early run to take a 9-1 lead and the Bears weren't able to recover as the home team took the first set. Cal fought back in the second, tying the score at eight on a Mirkovic kill, then again at 11 on a Smoot service ace. UCD took the momentum back after that, scoring four straight for a 15-11 lead to force the first Cal timeout. It was all Aggies from there for a 2-0 lead in the match.
Cal battled in the third, building a 9-6 advantage on a Bergmark kill, followed by an ace to force a UCD timeout. After the Aggies pulled to within one, three straight Cal points capped by another kill from Bergmark made UC Davis spend its final timeout of the set at 15-12. Tied at 17, the Bears scored six consecutive points to take the set and make it 2-1 UCD in the match.
UC Davis took an early advantage in the fourth frame at 13-6 and Cal didn't recover as the Aggies took the match.
Up Next: The Bears open Pac-12 play on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at Maples Pavilion against Stanford. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
