Rochester. Mich. - The Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a 87-72 decision to Oakland on New Years Day at the O'Rena.
The defeat was YSU's first in Horizon League play as it falls to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in league play. With the victory, the Golden Grizzlies improve to 9-4 and 4-0.
The contest was tied at 16 at the 10:28 mark when Michael Akuchie converted a 3-pointer. However, Oakland scored the next 22 points over a span of 3:12 building a 38-16 lead. Akuchie scored the Penguins' first points in 4:01 with a putback layup. YSU was able to pull within 50-34 at halftime after being down by as many as 22.
In the second half, the Penguins were able to pull within 59-47 with 14:40 remaining after Akuchie made a pair of free throws. The Golden Grizzlies answered with consecutive 3-pointers to push the contest to 65-47. Later in the frame, the Guins closed the gap to 71-58, but the Golden Grizzlies countered with eight straight points.
Akuchie scored 21 points for the Penguins, one shy of his season high making 5-of-9 field goals and 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Tevin Olison finished with 14 points and Dwayne Cohill added 12.
For the game, YSU shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the field and made eight 3-pointers. The Guins were 16-of-18 from the free-throw line. Oakland had four players score in double figures led by Jamal Cain's 23 points. Also for the Golden Grizzlies, Trey Townsend and Blake Lampman had 18 points each while Jalen Moore added 15.
Oakland shot 53.4 percent (31-of-38) for the contest making a season-high 13 3-pointers. Lampman led the way knocking down six of them.
YSU returns to action on Wednesday evening at Rober Morris. Tipoff at the UPMC Events Center is set for 7 p.m.
