MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Skidmore College men's basketball team fell on the road at Middlebury, 78-74, in the non-conference finale for the Thoroughbreds on Tuesday.

Greg Skoric led the way for Skidmore (5-3) with a double-double on 22 points and 10 rebounds in the first game for the Thoroughbreds in exactly a month. Harrison Eichelberger had 20 points on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range.

"I first want to thank Middlebury for having us up to play a game during what has been a very difficult time for everyone," Skidmore coach Joe Burke said. "It's been a while for us and the guys we had available were anxious to get out there. I'm disappointed in the result, but proud of our effort."

Middlebury (9-2), now winners of seven consecutive games, jumped to an early lead thanks in most part to Noah Osher's blistering start. He went 7-of-9 from the field with 14 points over the first 6:30 of play. Osher finished with 22 points. Sam Stevens had 20 points for the hosts. The Panthers led by as much as nine in the first half.

A pair of triples from Skoric and Eichelberger, sandwiched by a Jake Walsh fast break layup, narrowed the Middlebury advantage to just one with 5:32 left in the first half. After a pair of traded buckets, Skoric converted a 3-point play, giving him a dozen first-half points, and Skidmore's first lead of the afternoon. Tautvydas Kupstas then drilled back-to-back threes a cap an 11-0 Thoroughbred run to take an eight-point lead. Kupstas had 13 first-half points and finished the game with 15. Middlebury scored the final five points of the first half, including a last-second layup by Charley Moore, to shrink its deficit down to three.

The seesaw contest continued in the second half. Middlebury regained the lead near the four-minute mark, and it hovered around five before growing to 11 with 8:27 remaining. Skidmore inched forward until a 9-2 run consisting of a Riley Greene 3-point play and a pair of Eichelberger threes brought it to within three points.

With Skidmore trailing by six with under a minute remaining, Skoric hit two free throws and after a missed 3-pointer on the other end, Ty Lamport found Skoric for a layup to get Skidmore to within two points with 16.9 seconds left. Osher then sealed it for Middlebury with a pair of made free throws.

"We realize that we had opportunities to win the game and we will be better from it," Burke said. "As a whole, I feel like we are getting better and today we took a small step, but still have a way to go to hit our ceiling."

Skidmore is scheduled to return to Liberty League play on Friday, Jan. 7 at Union College. The weekend road trip concludes Saturday, Jan. 8 at RIT.
