The unemployment rate for Long Island continued to move lower in December and is now the region’s lowest in more than 20 years.

The Long Island unemployment rate for December was 2.6 percent, below the 3.5 percent unemployment rate recorded in November, and the lowest level since at least 1998, according to preliminary numbers from the New York State Department of Labor.

The combined not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for Nassau County was 2.6 percent in December and was 2.7 percent for Suffolk County.

By comparison, last month’s 2.6 percent Long Island unemployment rate is lower than the 3.1 percent pre-pandemic rate recorded in Dec. 2019 and the Nassau unemployment rate is now approaching the county’s all-time low rate of 2.4 percent recorded in Dec. 1998.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped from 6.6 percent in November to 6.2 percent last month.

New York City had the highest unemployment rates in the state last month, led by the Bronx (11.1 percent); Brooklyn (8.1 percent); Queens (7.6 percent) and Staten Island (7.1 percent).

Columbia, Saratoga and Tompkins counties led the state with the lowest unemployment rate at 2.2 percent.
