SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Led by a game-high 23 points from senior Amber Raisner, the Union College women's basketball team kept up with undefeated St. Lawrence University but came up just short, falling 62-58 in the teams' Liberty League opener on Friday night at Viniar Athletic Center.

Raisner was the lone Dutchwoman in double figures for Union (0-3, 0-1 Liberty League), hitting 10-of-20 shots from the field and adding five boards, four assists and three steals. Junior Megan Lee chipped in seven points and a team-high eight rebounds for the home team as well, while Ava McCann paced four St. Lawrence (6-0, 1-0 Liberty League) starters in double figures with 18 points.

The teams traded the lead six times in a back-and-forth first quarter. Raisner and classmates Darby Leid and Laura Vinton led the team with four points apiece in the frame, as the Dutchwomen shot 9-of-20 from the field. McCann carried her team's offensive load in the opening frame, scoring 10 points to keep her team within range down 20-18.

The second quarter followed a similar script, as the teams exchanged leads five times and neither side led by more than one possession. SLU outscored Union 14-10 in the period to take a 32-30 lead into haltime.

SLU created some separation early in the third quarter with a 7-2 run to open up a 39-35 lead, but junior Kendall Degenhardt scored on Union's next possession to start a 9-0 run that gave Union its largest lead of the night at 44-39 with 3:11 left in the third. While the Saints managed to close the gap, Union still headed to the fourth with a 47-45 lead.

The teams traded baskets for the first few minutes of the fourth frame, with Union still leading 53-51 after a Raisner layup. But a 9-1 SLU run gave the visitors a 60-54 lead with 2:10 remaining, as the home team missed all seven shots during the crucial stretch. Raisner sunk two shots to get Union within two at 60-58 with 30 seconds left, but Union came up one clutch shot short and the Saints hit enough free throws to escape with the win.

Union limited SLU to 39.4 percent (26 of 66) shooting on the night, including a 5-of-23 mark from beyond the arc, but only managed to connect at a 36.8 percent (25 of 68) clip. The home team did an excellent job of caring for the basketball, committing only nine turnovers, but the Saints were able to convert those miscues into 13 points.

Union will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon as the Dutchwomen host Clarkson University at 2 p.m. at Viniar Athletic Center.
