RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped with a 66-59 loss to the UTSA Roadrunners as part of the UTRGV South Padre Island Classic on Friday at the South Padre Island Convention Centre.
Graduate student Taylor Muff led the Vaqueros (4-6) with 19 points on a career-high five three-pointers and eight rebounds. Sophomore Sara Bershers scored 13 points with seven rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore Jena' Williams scored eight points with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. KaCee Kyle scored eight points. Graduate student Burcu Soysal finished with six points.
Jadyn Pimentel led the Roadrunners (3-4) with 22 points, four rebounds, two assists and five steals. Charlene Mass and LaPraisjah Johnson each scored nine points.
Muff opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The Roadrunners hit the next three baskets to take the lead, but the Vaqueros responded with five free throws and a Muff three to fuel a 9-2 run to take a 14-10 lead.
The Roadrunners scored the final seven points of the first quarter and the first eight of the second quarter to cap a 15-0 run and go up 25-14.
The Roadrunners took their largest lead of the half at 29-17 before the Vaqueros went on an 8-2 run, powered by a pair of Soysal layups, to pull within 31-25.
Then, with the score 33-27, the Roadrunners went on a 7-0 run to push their lead back into double-figures early in the third quarter.
The Vaqueros pulled back to within single figures on a Kyle three that made the score 45-36 late in the third. The Roadrunners, however, followed with a 7-2 run to take their largest lead at 52-28.
The Vaqueros opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run, capped by a Kyle three-point play, to pull within 52-46.
The Vaqueros were again within six at 57-51 on a Bershers free throw with 2:27 remaining, but that's as close as they got.
The UTRGV South Padre Island Classic concludes on Saturday as UTRGV hosts Liberty, which beat Grand Canyon 76-61, at 1 p.m., and Grand Canyon faces UTSA at 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com.
