NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Niagara picked up two points in the standings with a 1-0 shootout win over Army Friday night at Dwyer Arena. Ryan Cox scored the shootout winner, and Chad Veltri stopped all three shots from the Black Knights.

Walker Sommer scored twice in regulation and Lars Rodne found the back of the net for the first time in his career. Veltri matched his season-high with 34 saves. 

Game Recap

First Period
• The Purple Eagles got on the board first when Walker Sommer found the back of the net during the power play. Luke Edgerton and Mike Faulkner were awarded the assists.
• Army would tie the score midway through the first period.
• Niagara recorded its first penalty kill in the latter portion of the period, keeping the game tied at 1-1 heading into the second period.
• Niagara had 10 shots on goal in the first period.

Second Period
• Moments after serving two minutes for tripping, Sommer left the box and found himself behind the Army defense. Josef Mysak found his teammate and Sommer rifled a shot from the high slot past the goalie to put Niagara up 2-0.  
• Freshman Lars Rodne scored his first career goal at the 13:44 mark to put the Purple and White up 3-1. The freshman snuck by the Black Knight defender and got the puck past the goalie.
• Edgerton picked up his second assist of the night on the goal. Shane Ott was recorded with the secondary helper on the play. 
• The Purple and White finished the second with seven shots on goal and killed

Third Period
• Army scored a power-play goal 50 seconds into the third period, trimming the Niagara lead to 3-
• The Black Knights would even score three with 35 seconds left on the clock, forcing overtime.
• Despite allowing the game-tying goal, Veltri made 16 of his 34 saves in the third period.
• The Purple Eagles won 15 of the periods 23 faceoffs.

Overtime
• Veltri made two saves in the extra frame.
Chris Harpur put the lone Purple Eagle shot on net in overtime as Niagara took two shots total.

Shootout
• Cox scored the lone shootout goal, going through the legs of the Army keeper for the goal.
• Veltri stopped all three shots he saw in the shootout. 

Niagara Notes
• Friday was the first shootout win for the Purple and White since Jan. 4 of last season when they picked up the bonus point against Air Force, 2-1.
• Sommer scored two goals for the second time in his Niagara career.
• The redshirt senior now has a team-best four goals on the season.
• Veltri matched his season-high with 34 saves and now has 25 or more stops in three of his five games played.
• Niagara went 1-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
• The Purple Eagles blocked 10 shots, won 31 faceoffs and had a 24 of their 36 shots go on net.
• Edgerton and Faulkner both finished the night with two assists.

• Niagara and Army will wrap up its weekend series Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
