ORLANDO, Fla. – Representing the FGCU women's tennis team, sophomore Fanny Norin (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Ida Ferding (Vasteras, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) competed at the ITA Southeast Regionals over the weekend, picking up a couple of wins along the way.
"This was a great weekend, good matches for the ladies and a great opportunity to be here and play with some of the top players in the region," said assistant coach Maja Ornberg. "Now we know what to go home and keep getting better at."
Norin advanced to Sunday by taking down Anais Gabriel from Stetson in a hard-fought three-set battle, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 on Saturday.
On Sunday, Norin dropped her match, 5-7, 1-6 to her opponent from Georgia.
The weekend got started on Friday as the pair competed together as a doubles team before breaking off to compete in the singles bracket.
As a duo, they fell to Marie Mattel and Nandini Sharma of Central Florida, 8-2, but rebounded on Saturday with an 8-5 win over Sierra Berry and Amelie Boy of South Florida in the consolation bracket.
In singles action on Friday, Ferding took a set from Sharma, but ultimately fell, 2-6, 6-2, 2-6, while Norin dropped her match, 1-6, 4-6 to #6-seed Marlee Zein of Florida.

FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon (9th season) who led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN regular-season crowns in her fifth season in 2018. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 63 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including 2014, 2016, and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to an 85-64 overall record (.570) and 36-10 conference record (.782).
