Kahol Lavan is expected to block the formation of a new government committee that will determine protocols for making senior civil service appointments, despite the fact that the panel’s establishment is included in the party’s coalition agreement with Likud.

Sources in Likud ascribe great importance to the proposed committee, saying it will increase Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s influence over the nominations for the next attorney general and state prosecutor.

A senior figure in Kahol Lavan told Haaretz that his party will not accept the establishment of the panel, even if that means violating the coalition agreement. “Likud’s attempt to politicize the manner in which senior officials are appointed in Israel ends today,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The coalition agreement between Likud and Kahol Lavan specifies that new civil service appointments shall not be made for the duration of the coronavirus national state of emergency. It also calls for the formation of a committee, whose composition is to be equally balanced between the two blocs making up the coalition, for the purpose of setting the guidelines for agreeing on new senior appointments in the civil service after the state of emergency is lifted.

On Saturday evening, Regional Cooperation Minister Ofir Akunis criticized the decision of Defense Minister and Kahol Lavan Chairman Benny Gantz to move forward on selecting the next state prosecutor, despite the failure to establish the proposed advisory committee. “Factually it is a complete violation of the coalition agreements and this will have consequences,” Akunis said in an interview with Channel 1. “We could find ourselves, unfortunately, in a situation in which Kahol Lavan will drag us down into a new election, by violating the coalition agreements,” he added.
