Electronic court records state that Ruben Coronado, 32, was given two 18-month suspended sentences to be served on probation during a Thursday change of plea hearing in New Mexico’s 5th Judicial District Court in Chaves County.

The sentence handed down by Judge Jared Kallunki is in line with the recommendation made by the District Attorney’s Office and supported by the defense as part of a change of plea agreement.

Coronado, as part of the agreement, changed his initial not guilty plea to one of no contest on one count each of non-residential burglary; unlawful taking of a motor vehicle; and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

Three counts of larceny $250 or less; and one count of receiving or transferring a stolen motor vehicle were dismissed by the prosecution per plea agreement.

According to the agreement, Coronado over the next year must make restitution to the dealership.

Coronado was accused of breaking into a dealership in the 1300 block of Southeast Main Street on March 8 and driving away in an orange 2019 Dodge Challenger that was on the lot.

According to court records, Coronado allegedly came onto the property at 11:57 p.m., where he broke a window and took from an office in the dealership the keys to a Jeep Wrangler.

Footage from surveillance cameras showed Coronado exit the building and look into two jeeps through their windows before re-entering the dealership. Court records state he then came back out, climbed into the Challenger and drove off the lot.

The next morning a dealership employee reported the break-in and theft.

A Chaves County Sheriff’s deputy subsequently spotted Coronado driving the Challenger and made an unsuccessful attempt to conduct a traffic stop on it.

Coronado was later stopped and arrested by Roswell police while driving the Challenger in the 300 block of South Main Street, according to court documents.

Because he initially refused to comply with orders issued by the officers, Coronado had to be forcibly extracted from the vehicle.

Court records state he later admitted that he had taken the Challenger to investigate what was happening in his personal life and had intended to return it.
