Boxer Volleyball Picks Up Five Set Win - Pacific University Athletics

McMINNVILE, Ore.- The Pacific University volleyball team defeated Linfield on Saturday night in five sets. The Boxers were led offensively by Mara Murphy (Freshman/Salt Lake City, Utah) who finished the night with 22 kills while also contirbuting 22 digs to Pacific's 122 total digs.  (25-21, 25-17, 26-28, 23-25, 15-7)

Pacific and Linfield opened the match with a first set that saw numerous scoring runs from both sides. Linfield was able to open with a scoring run in which they took 11 of the first 17 points scored by the two teams. Pacific then was able to ignite a 13-8 run that saw them tie the game up at 19. The Boxers were able to put one final run together in the set to secure the 25-21 win. In set one, Pacific was led by a .571 hitting percentage from Carissa Ramirez (Senior/Hillsboro, OR) that produced four kills in the set.

The Boxers used momentum from the first set to open an early 5-2 lead before Linfield would tie the game up at nine. Pacific would score the next six points to open up a commanding 15-9 lead. The momentum would not end there as the visitors from Forest Grove were able to extend the lead to eight and take set two 25-17. Walz was able to lead the Boxer defense in the set totaling eight digs while Danica Nelson (Freshman/Folsom, CA) was able to add six of her own.

In set three, the Boxers and Wildcats played fairly even with neither team taking a lead greater than three points. The match was tied at 26 when Linfield was able to win the last two deciding points of the set following two attack errors from the Boxers. Linfield earned the set win behind a .185 hitting percentage.
 

The Wildcats were able to avoid a deciding set loss in the fourth when they took set four 25-23 by forcing 13 total errors from the Boxers. Linfield, outhitting Pacific with a .163 hitting percentage difference, was able to take the win. 
 

For the third time in the last four matches, Pacific found themselves in a match that needed five sets to decide a winner. The Boxers freshman right side hitter, Murphy, set the tone early with two kills that found the floor on Linfield's side of the net. A block by Ramirez would put Pacific up 7-3 and force the Wildcats to take their first timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Boxers would outscore Linfield 8-4 to secure the victory.

·      Pacific was led by a .226 hitting percentage from Elika Unti (Senior/Castro Valley, CA)

·      Shianne Cambra (Junior/Kapolei, HI) led the Boxers with 46 assists

The Boxers conclude the season with two home matches on November 5th and 6th against Willamette and Pacific Lutheran.
