Ducks’ Ryan Getzlaf set to break Teemu Selanne’s record - OCRegister

When the then-Mighty Ducks acquired Teemu Selanne from the then-Winnipeg Jets in the Steal of the Century, fans cheered when the “Finnish Flash” was announced as a scratch for a Feb. 7, 1996, game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the then-Arrowhead Pond.

Selanne would make his Ducks debut three days later against the New York Islanders, and nothing was the same about the franchise again. Selanne, with a great deal of assistance in his first stint with the team from Paul Kariya, set the Ducks on a course of distinction.

Upon his return to Orange County in 2005, after an ill-advised trade to the San Jose Sharks in 2001, Selanne led the Ducks to a Stanley Cup championship in 2006-07. He would complete his Hall of Fame career with 988 points with the Ducks, and 1,457 overall.

In Ducks history, nobody did it better.

Not until Friday night in Las Vegas, anyway.

That’s when Ryan Getzlaf tied Selanne’s franchise record with an assist in the Ducks’ 5-4 shootout loss to the Vegas Golden Knights for his 988th point. Getzlaf can claim the record for his own with a goal or an assist during the Ducks’ afternoon date Sunday with the Montreal Canadiens.

Selanne retired after the 2013-14 season, departing as the face of the franchise. Getzlaf then assumed the role without fear or favor. After all, Getzlaf was already the team captain, having inherited the role from Hall of Fame defenseman Scott Niedermayer to start the 2010-11 season.

No one has captained the Ducks for as long.

“What he brings to this team is more than any other person,” said rookie Trevor Zegras, who might one day inherit the place of honor that Getzlaf once inherited from Selanne. “To have just a small piece of his unbelievable career is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life, for sure.”

Getzlaf has six points, all assists, in nine games in 2021-22.

FACTS AND FIGURES

According to research by the Ducks’ crack media relations staff, Getzlaf and Selanne combined on 114 goals as teammates between 2005-06 and 2013-14, the first on Oct. 23, 2005, against the then-Phoenix Coyotes (Petr Sykora with a goal, assisted by Getzlaf and Selanne) and the last on March 24, 2014, against the Florida Panthers (Getzlaf with a goal, assisted by Selanne and Stephane Robidas). …

Getzlaf has recorded 532 of his 988 points at Honda Center. He has recorded at least one point in 37 arenas around North America, plus one in a baseball stadium, having assisted on a goal during the Ducks’ 3-0 victory over the Kings on Jan. 25, 2014, at Dodger Stadium. …

Selanne recorded one of his 988 points with the Ducks in the swimming venue used for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, now known as Yoyogi National Gymnasium. The Ducks and Vancouver Canucks opened the 1997-98 season with two games in Tokyo in advance of the 1998 Nagano Olympics. …

The Ducks became the first team in NHL history to rally from three-goal deficits on consecutive nights when they wiped out a 3-0 deficit Thursday in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Jets and then erased a 4-1 deficit Friday in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Golden Knights. Only two other teams have done it in consecutive games.
