CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Fourteenth-ranked Virginia scored with 1:42 remaining in the second overtime to hand No. 20 Duke a heartbreaking, 3-2, setback in ACC field hockey action this evening at UVA Turf Field. Amber Ezechiels scored the winner for the Cavaliers.

Duke drops to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in ACC play, while Virginia improves to 7-3 and 2-1 against conference foes.

"It's so fun [to coach in a game like this]," said head coach Pam Bustin. "When a game is this close it's fun when it's truly competitive, not when your team isn't competing and you should be doing better. This was a competitive game and I thought we absolutely had our chances. We stayed positive when it didn't work out because we kept believing.
We just have to keep working on the belief in our finishing."

Graduate student MaryKate Neff and Hannah Miller scored for the Blue Devils, who led until after three quarters.

Despite dominating possession in the first overtime, Duke and Virginia headed to a second extra period. The Blue Devils earned a penalty corner late in the stanza, but a Crouse shot skipped wide of the cage.

Minutes later the Cavaliers capitalized on a whistle just past midfield and went on a 2-on-1 fastbreak with Annie McDonough providing the pass to Ezechiels inside the circle who beat Duke goalie Piper Hampsch. Hampsch finished the night with six saves, including a fabulous stop in overtime.

The Blue Devils had the first scoring chance of the evening when Neff dribbled into the circle and fired a shot just left of the cage less than three minutes into the game.

However, much like has happened throughout the season, the Cavaliers came down two minutes later to score an early goal for the 1-0 lead. Ezechiels' shot straight off the first penalty corner of the game put Virginia up in the fifth minute.

The Cavaliers carried that momentum through the rest of the quarter, firing five more shots. Hampsch recorded saves on the two that were on target to keep Virginia's lead to just 1-0.

The second quarter was a reversal of fortunes as the Blue Devils outshot Virginia 6-2 and won four penalty corners. Despite finding space inside the Cavalier circle, Duke was unable to capitalize and headed into the half trailing, 1-0.

The Blue Devils came out in the third stanza the way they finished the opening half – in attack mode. The pressure paid off as Neff evened the score only 90 seconds into the period, hitting in a rebound after an initial save by Virginia goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy.

Lily Posternak provided the insert and Eva Nunnink got a great shot off only to be denied by Kennedy. The ball fell in the direction of Leah Crouse to the right of the cage and the savvy forward hit it low through traffic back in front of the goal where Neff tipped redirected it past Kennedy.

After some back and forth hockey for the rest of the third quarter, Duke grabbed the lead 1:43 into the fourth period. This time it was Miller scoring on an assist from freshman Logan Clouser. The rookie hit the ball towards the cage and it bounced off Kennedy and landed at Miller's feet and she pushed it over the line.

Virginia answered five minutes later on a penalty corner. The initial shot was stopped by Hampsch, but the ball slid to the far post where Makayla Gallen tapped it in to make it 2-2 and eventually force overtime and the heartbreaking finish.

Duke heads out of conference for its next contest, Sunday, Oct. 3 at No. 12 Liberty. First hit is set for 1 p.m., on ESPN+.
