TROY, NY — The undefeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers will begin their march toward the postseason Saturday afternoon when the Rochester Yellowjackets come to Troy for the first Liberty League came since 2019 at East Campus Athletic Village Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon between the two conference rivals and it will be a good one. RPI comes in at 4-0 after last weeks dismantling of another Rochester school, St. John Fisher, 41-7. Prior to last week RPI picked up wins over Montclair State, Stevenson, and WPI.

Rochester comes to Troy sporting a 1-2 record. The Yellowjackets were off last week following a 16-7 loss to Brockport on September 18. Rochester beat Alfred State 28-27 on September 11 and lost Case Western Reserve University 27-20 on September 4.

In last week’s win, RPI’s offense continued the momentum it had begun to build against WPi. Quarterback George Marinopoulos played as well as he could have, completing 21 of 25 passes for 252 yards and five touchdowns. Peter Lombardi caught three of those touchdowns and D.J Palmer and Gil Goldsmith each added one of their own. RPI totaled 472 yards in the win.

Marinopoulos was selected as the Liberty League “Offensive Performer of the Week”  after his performance against St. John Fisher and Francis Perry was named his defensive counterpart.

The story for RPI continues to be their defense. Last week they allowed one touchdown to bring their season total to just three touchdowns allowed all season. Lou Vigeant led the Engineers with seven tackles, including five unassisted. Joe Deptula was right behind with six and Francis Perry had two interceptions. RPI has allowed the least amount of touchdowns in the entire Liberty League, third least yards, and the second least amount of passing yards. They have the third most interceptions.

RPI and Rochester have faced each other 78 times. Rochester leads the series with a 41-33-4 record which dates back to October 13, 1906 when the Engineers and Yellowjackets played to a 0-0 tie. RPI is, however, 8-2 of the last ten meetings and is 17-17-3 at home against Rochester. In Liberty League play, RPI is 18-6 against the Yellowjackets.

When the two teams played back in 2019 it was RPI coming away the favorite with a 38-0 victory. The defense intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles for RPI and Marinopoulos passed for 238 yards and four touchdowns. RPI totalled 357 yards in the win. Rochester was limited to 131 yards.

RPI’s offense is getting going without two huge weapons in its arsenal. Reciever Vinne McDonald and running back Delano Munoz Whatts have been off the field since WPI. Dylan Burnett has taken up for Munoz Whatts absence while it’s been fill-in by committee on the receiving front.

RPI continues to receive national recognition with 18 votes for D3Football.com’s Top 25. Other Liberty League teams on the list are Union (ranked 12), Ithaca (17), and Hobart (21).

RPI will continue to look to crack that top 25. A win over Rochester may give them the chance to crack it. Buffalo State will be in Troy next week before RPI goes on the road against Hobart. RPI will have a bye week after Hobart before their final home game on October 30 against Ithaca. The Engineers will finish their season against St. Lawrence and Union on the road.
