HONOLULU – At the end of a long road trip, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team was tasked with the challenge of facing Big West Conference leader Hawai'i Saturday evening. The Roadrunners battled the Rainbow Wahine, but eventually fell in three close sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-18).
"I thought we had great moments tonight," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "But to succeed against a team like Hawai'i we have to do that for long periods of time. It has been a long stretch on the road for us. It will be great to be back home for the next two weekends."
Hawai'i improved to 8-0 in Big West play with the victory on its home court. The `Runners fell to 10-6 on the year and 3-5 in league contests. After four-straight matches on the road, CSUB will head back to Bakersfield and prepare to host the team's next four matches in the Icardo Center.
On the evening, CSUB used a well-balanced offensive effort with four different `Runners tallying six kills or more. Milica Vukobrat, a native of Serbia, led Bakersfield with nine kills on the night while adding five digs. CSUB's setter, Seleisa Elisaia, averaged 10.0 assists per set while recording her team-high 12th double-double of the season with 11 digs.
CSUB came out swinging in Set 1, sprinting ahead to a 7-1 advantage over its hosts, but Hawai'i answered right back with an 11-1 run to take a four-point lead on the `Runners. Trailing 22-14, CSUB won four-straight points to pull within four, but the Rainbow Wahine held off the `Runners for a 25-18 victory. Freshman Samia Bhakta led Bakersfield with four kills in the opening set.
Bakersfield continued dominating early play in the second set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead on Hawai'i. CSUB led 12-6 when the Rainbow Wahine slowly started creeping back into the game. Hawai'i finally gained a lead at 16-15, but the two teams found themselves tied at 19 all. From there, the host team won six of the last seven points as CSUB dropped a tight set, 25-20.
The third set was even early on as the two teams traded blows. CSUB used a 3-0 run to take a 17-15 lead and force the Bows to call a timeout. The pep talk worked as Hawai'i closed the match on an 8-3 run to earn a 25-18 win and a 3-0 match victory.
Once they arrive back in Bakersfield, the `Runners will begin preparations to welcome four Big West teams to the Icardo Center over the next two weeks. CSUB will host UC Irvine on Friday, Oct. 22, before taking on UC San Diego the next night. The following weekend, the `Runners will start the second half of Big West play when CSUB gets rematches against Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
