LOGAN SQUARE — Police are urging neighbors to be on alert after a string of car break-ins in Logan Square gym parking lots.
At least 10 car break-ins have been reported in the XSport Fitness and Planet Fitness parking lots since March 29, police and the alderman said. In all of the incidents, someone has broken the back window and stolen personal belongings from cars parked at 2310 W. Logan Blvd. and 2719 N. California Ave., police said in a community alert.
The recent break-ins are the latest in what has been an ongoing problem in the neighborhood, Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) said in an email. People have targeted the two parking lots “for some time,” stealing bags, laptops and other personal items left on seats in clear view, Waguespack said.
The alderman said his office and police have asked Planet Fitness to install surveillance cameras and signs, but the gym hasn’t taken any steps to combat the issue. A manager at Planet Fitness didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
A manager at XSport Fitness deferred questions to the gym’s corporate office, which was closed.
As for the most recent break-ins, no arrests have been made, 14th District Sgt. Michael Edens said. Detectives are investigating.
Edens said they’ve stationed officers in the area and are distributing flyers, urging residents to take personal belongings with them or hide them in the trunk to avoid theft.

- 11 p.m. March 29-noon March 30 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 9:30-11:45 p.m. April 1 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 8-10:30 p.m. April 1 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 6:11 p.m. April 2 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 7:30-10 p.m. April 2 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 11:40 a.m. April 3 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 5-6 p.m. April 5 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 4-6 p.m. April 13 in the 2700 block of North California Avenue
- 6:15-7:30 a.m. April 15 in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard
- 6:20 a.m.-11:59 p.m. April 15 in the 2700 block of North California Avenue
