WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield High School moved down in its national standings and up among its New Jersey peers in U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of “Best High Schools.”
The ranking released Tuesday puts Westfield High School at #992 in the national standings, a drop of 13 places from its spot at #979 in 2020. In New Jersey, however, the high school moved up two spots to #41, from #43 in 2020.
The national ranking based on pre-pandemic data included 17,857 schools and the statewide ranking included 405 schools, according to U.S. News & World Report, which in a statement said it compiled the rankings in coordination with the nonprofit social science research firm RTI International.
Participation in Advanced Placement classes at Westfield High School is 55%, total minority enrollment is 17%, and 3% of students at the high school are economically disadvantaged, the magazine said. U.S. News & World Report in its statement called itself the “global authority in education rankings” and described its methodology.
The methodology focuses college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates, the magazine said.
“Data used in the 2021 rankings in almost all cases is from the 2018-2019 school year,” U.S. News & World Report said. “This data in most cases is from each state's education agency website or directly from state education agencies.”
College readiness specifically measures participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams, U.S. News & World Report said.
