KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Despite falling in the series finale to Bowling Green 20-6 on Sunday afternoon the Western Michigan baseball team split its weekend series with the Falcons inside Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.

In the series finale on Sunday the Broncos produced six runs on seven hits with five players earning a hit for the Brown & Gold. The WMU offense was led by sophomore Gavin Doyle who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one run scored. The multi-hit game was the third of the season for Doyle.

Five different Broncos registered an RBI in the series finale with junior Connor Charping collecting two RBIs for his team-leading sixth multi-RBI game of the season. Along with two RBIs Charping also had one stolen base. In the leadoff spot, sophomore Jimmy Allen was 1-for-3 against the Falcons with one RBI and one run scored.

Behind six different pitchers the Broncos struck out eight Falcon batters and allowed just three extra-base hits. In one inning of relief freshman LHP Luke Pappas allowed no earned runs on three hits with one strikeout. Out of the bullpen sophomore RHP Brady Miller led the staff with three strikeouts.

Despite the series finale loss, the Broncos earned the series split with Bowling Green and have now won or split each of its last four MAC series. Over the weekend the Bronco offense scored 27 runs on 30 hits while hitting .275 with 14 extra-base hits.

Leading the way offensively for WMU against BGSU in the four-game series was Allen who hit .462 with one double, one triple, one home run and four RBIs. Allen also scored three runs and had a .923 slugging percentage. Senior Drew Devine led the Brown & Gold with five RBIS to go along with a .333 batting average.

As a team Western Michigan has five players with over a .300 batting average and six players with at least three RBIs in the series. The trio of Charping, Logan Hudson and Sean O'Keefe led WMU with five runs scored each.

On the mound WMU tallied 28 strikeouts with LHP Brandon Petersen leading the way with five in his game one start on Friday. The Broncos had a trio of pitchers with a 0.00 ERA led by Brenden Lovell who pitched three innings, allowing no runs on just two hits with four strikeouts.

Western Michigan now has an overall record of 13-17 and 12-8 in conference play. The Broncos are on the road for their next two MAC series beginning on Friday, April 30 against Toledo. WMU then travels to DeKalb, Ill., for a match-up with Northern Illinois, May 7-9.

Bowling Green got on the board first in the top of the second as the Falcons scored eight runs on six hits. BGSU extended its lead to 10-0 after scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth.

The Broncos rallied back in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs on five hits. WMU loaded the bases with no outs before McIntyre earned an RBI on a fielder's choice to give the Broncos its first run of the ballgame. One batter later, Devine roped an
RBI single to cut the BGSU deficit down to 10-2.

Freshman Josh Swinehart registered an RBI on a fielder's choice for WMU's third run prior to Jimmy Allen lacing an RBI single through the left side to trim the Bronco deficit down to six.

The Broncos scored once again in the bottom of the sixth, tallying two runs on one hit and capitalizing on a BGSU error. With two outs and runners on first and second the BGSU right fielder dropped a fly ball, allowing two Bronco runs to come across home plate.

However, the Falcon offense was on fire in the late innings scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth along with four runs in the sixth and seventh to clinch the series finale 20-6 in seven innings.
