Errors Prove to be the Difference as Softball Drops Game to Jacksonville State - Morehead State University Athletics - MSU Eagles

apenabe.blogspot.com
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Unforced mistakes were the deciding factor in Morehead State's Sunday contest with Jacksonville State as the Eagles fall 5-3 to open the conference series. MSU tallied three errors on the day, the most since a three-error matchup with Tennessee State on April 2.

One positive note for Morehead State is a combined batting average of .296 in today's game, the highest for the Eagles since batting .321 in their win over Dayton on April 7. Leading the way for MSU were Peyton Jordan and Lennon Spicer, as the two freshmen both earned multi-hit games on the afternoon.

Spicer also added a complete game in the circle as she has now earned the decision in nine straight matchups for Morehead State. The Charlotte, Tenn. native has also thrown a complete game in seven of MSU's last nine contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles scored first as Trinity Spear's single to center field brought Alexis Strother home before Peyton Jordan was tagged out at the plate to end the bottom of the first.
  • Both teams were held scoreless for the next three innings before a fielding error by Morehead State allowed a runner to come home for JSU in the top of the fifth.
  • Another error by MSU in the sixth saw a runner cross the plate before an RBI double gave the Gamecocks a 3-1 lead.
  • Jacksonville State added two more in the top of the seventh with a single up the middle followed by a sacrifice fly that featured an impressive diving grab by right fielder Jennifer Clausen.
  • Peyton Slater came in to score in the bottom half of the inning after a routine groundball off the bat of Clausen was misfielded. A hard-hit ball by Josie Wefer ricocheted off the glove of the JSU left fielder as Peyton Jordan crossed the plate to represent the final run of the ballgame.

NOTABLE
  • After going 2-for-4 today, Peyton Jordan is now tied for second on the team with her sixth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Trinity Spear recorded her first RBI since MSU's contest with Eastern Illinois on March 7.
  • Kirya Kingery led off the game for Morehead State with the first triple for the Eagles since their March 17 contest with Kentucky State in which Kingery and Maddie Kawall each registered a three-bagger.
  • The four unearned runs allowed by MSU this afternoon are the most for the Eagles since game one of a doubleheader with Eastern Illinois on March 7 saw four unearned Panther runs cross the plate.
  • Morehead State combined for seven walks on the game, the most since also registering seven BBs against Dayton on April 7.
