Southern California, which is ranked 10th by Golfstat, continues to lead the field. The Trojans recorded a 287 in the second round and are now 2-over (570) heading into the last day. No. 7 Arizona State moved up from third to second with the best round in the field (283) and is just four strokes behind USC (574). No. 26 Stanford dropped from second to third (575) and No. 22 Arizona also slid from third to fourth (576).
The Buffaloes (302-298—600) started on the back nine for the second straight round. They recorded a four-stroke improvement from the first round Friday to the second round Saturday at the 6,269-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course with three Buffs carding lower scores on Saturday. Heading into the final 18-holes, CU has a three-stroke advantage over eighth-place Washington (603). Oregon State is currently ninth and is eight strokes behind the Buffs (608), while California (609) fell from sixth to 10th and is nine strokes back from CU.
Junior Malak Bouraeda was one of CU's three who recorded a better round on Saturday. After finishing fifth for the team with an 84 in the first round, she carded the best second round for the Buffs with a 71. Her 13-stroke improvement was the best in the field. The next best was by USC's Brianna Navarrosa who recorded an 80 in the first round and a 69 in the second (11). Bouraeda is now tied for 38th (155).
She shot a 1-under on the back nine with a pair of birdies on No. 11 and No. 18. She also made par six times and had one bogey (No. 15). Saturday's back nine saw a five-stroke improvement, but the biggest change for her was the front nine as Bouraeda had trouble there Friday, recording a 9-over 44 with a pair of triple-bogeys on No. 2 and No. 9. This time she made par on both of those holes. She finished just 1-over (36) on the front nine with one birdie and two bogeys and made par on the other four remaining holes.
Another Buff, freshman Hailey Schalk, also saw a decent improvement from the first to the second round. Schalk recorded an 81 on Friday and came back on Saturday to score a 75. She fired two birdies and made 11 pars while scoring a 1-over 37 on the back nine to start and finishing with a 3-over 38 on the front. On Friday she recorded three double-bogeys, but on Saturday she only carded one, which saved her four strokes in her first conference championship. Heading into the final round she is tied for 42nd.
Sophomore Ellie Gower slipped in the individual standings a bit and is tied for 12th (70-76—146) after having a bit of trouble on the last four holes of the back nine. Gower, who recorded her first sub-par round as a Buff on Friday, shot a 76 on Saturday. Her round started well as she made par on the first five holes of the back nine. Unfortunately, she finished the back nine with back-to-back bogeys on No. 15 and No 16, followed by a double and then another bogey on No. 18.
She was 5-over heading into the front nine but regrouped well making four straight pars to start. Gower did record another bogey, on No. 5, but followed it with a birdie on No. 6. She finished the round making par on the last three holes to stay at 5-over for the day.
Senior Kirsty Hodgkins is currently tied for 30 (74-78—152). She had a decent second round going with two bogeys and six pars but a triple-bogey on No. 18 put her at 5-over (41) as she finished the back nine. She played well on the front, recording a 2-over (35).
Junior Alisha Lau cut one stroke off her first round as she finished the day with a 76 and is tied for 32nd (132). She led CU with 14 pars in the round.
"The team played a good, competitive second nine today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We made a lot of pars and need a few more birdies. This is a great golf course, a very good test of golf. Our plan is to go out and give it our all tomorrow!"
UCLA's Emma Spitz is the individual leader with one round remaining. She recorded a pair of 68s and is 6-under (136). Stanford's Rachel Heck is one stroke behind (137).
The Buffs will be paired with Washington for the third round. They will tee off from the 10th hole starting at 8:10 a.m. PT.
