Volleyball Drops Series Finale at Miami - EMU Eagles

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell in the two-match series finale at Miami University, 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 15-25, 22-25), tonight, March 20, inside Miami's Millett Hall. EMU has lost two straight and drops to 7-10 in Mid-American Conference play, while MU holds a 10-8 mark.

Senior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) paced the Green and White with 13 kills, while sophomore Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic) added 12 with a .314 attack percentage (12-1-35). Additionally, senior April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest) and redshirt sophomore Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) each tallied seven kills.

Spearheading the Eagles' offense was sophomore Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge), who recorded 40 assists. The setter also added 13 digs, two kills, and two blocks.

Leading the Green and White defense was freshman Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern), who tallied 27 digs, while Strefling contributed 12 digs. Additionally, Chase posted a team-high six blocks.

Eastern Michigan finished the evening with a .203 attack percentage (47-17-148), compared to Miami's .286 clip (63-17-161). The Eagles held the dig advantage (72-71), while the RedHawks led in kills (63-47), assists (58-45), and aces (7-6). Team total blocks were tied at 7-apiece.

EMU trailed early to start the first set, but the Eagles posted a 3-0 run to take the 5-4 advantage. The scoring went back-and-forth over the next few possessions, and the Green and White were the first to reach 15 points (15-13). Miami regained the one-point lead, 20-19, on a 7-4 scoring drive. However, Eastern Michigan closed the set with a 6-1 scoring run to take the first game, 25-21.

Up by one, EMU struggled to continue its momentum as the RedHawks took an early 4-1 lead. But, Eastern posted a 5-1 run to take its first lead of the set at 6-5. However, Miami sparked a 10-2 run to take the 15-9 edge. The RedHawks continued to gain traction and never looked back, claiming the second set, 25-17.

Tied at 1-1 for the match, the scoring went back-and-forth with Miami having the one-point lead, 6-5. However, Miami took its momentum from the second set to spark a 10-4 run for the 16-9 advantage. The RedHawks ran away with the third set on a 10-5 drive for the 25-15 win. MU led 2-1 for the match.

Eastern Michigan started the fourth set with a small lead at 6-5, but both teams sparked a scoring stint to tie up the game at 11-all. Over the next few volleys, EMU sparked a 3-1 stint to take a three-point lead, 15-12. However, Miami regained the one-point advantage, 18-17, off a 6-2 run. Eastern Michigan started to turn up the heat to tie up the set at 20-all off a Chase kill. But, MU posted a 5-2 run to claim the set 25-22, and won the match, 3-1.

EMU will return to Ypsilanti to host in-state rival Central Michigan University Tuesday, March 23. The match is slated for 6 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
