ATHENS, Ohio – The Central Michigan baseball team managed just two hits on Friday in falling to Ohio, 5-1, in the Chippewas' Mid-American Conference opener at the Bobcats' Bob Wren Stadium.

The Chippewas (8-7) and Bobcats (8-7, 2-3 MAC) are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.). They are slated to close the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).

"It's just important that we come out excited to play (on Saturday)," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "I don't think anybody predicted that we'd go undefeated in the league. That ship has sailed. It's just a matter of us bouncing back tomorrow."

CMU got its first hit, and scored it only run, in the first inning on a Zach Lechnir RBI single. The Chippewas' other hit came in the fifth, when Chase Rollin led off with an infield single. CMU then drew two walks to load the bases but left them loaded.

CMU starter Jordan Patty (1-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked three and struck out seven over six innings in taking the loss.

"He battled his butt off," Bischel said of Patty, a junior right-hander. "I didn't think he threw bad early; I thought he threw OK, but Ohio did a really good job. They drove the ball, they hit some balls really hard.

"We shot ourselves in the foot just a little bit. There were a couple of (Ohio) leadoff hitters where we could have made a defensive play to make the inning a little bit easier, but again they did some good things against Jordan. I thought he really competed and did well to keep us in the game."

Ryan Culley, Logan Buczkowski and Drew Alsobrooks worked in relief for the Chippewas.

Ohio starter Joe Rock (3-1), a junior left-hander, struck out six and walked three over six innings for the victory. Senior Edward Kutt IV struck out six in three innings of relief for the save, his third.

"Those two pitchers are awfully, awfully good," Bischel said. "Rock will be a very early (draftee), top few rounds for sure; he's one of the better prospects in the country. We battled him and competed, got some runners on, but he's tough.

"Then their reliever Kutt, he's been very tough for them for a couple of years now and he had good stuff for them tonight. You always like to get more hits, hit some balls hard, but sometimes you have to tip the cap too that very good pitching can beat any hitting."
