Baseball Drops Rubber Match to Stetson - FGCU Athletics

apenabe.blogspot.com
DELAND, Fla. – After falling behind early, the FGCU baseball team (13-9, 1-2 ASUN) went on to drop its first ASUN series of the year and suffered a 13-4 defeat at the hands of Stetson (16-8, 2-1 ASUN) on Sunday afternoon at Melching Field. The Hatters' rubber match victory handed them the overall series, 2-1.

Despite the loss, freshman Ian Farrow (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) shined as he led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and homered for the first time in his career. On the bump, freshman Ronaldo Gallo (Miami, Fla./Miami Southridge) had a solid appearance in relief, facing just one over the minimum in 2.0 IP. He was the only Green & Blue arm to emerge from the battle with zero earned runs tagged to his name.

"We knew this was going to be a tough series, but I don't think that Stetson was unbeatable," head coach Dave Tollett said. "Our pitching just wasn't as solid as it could have been and we struggled with timely hitting throughout the day. Winning on the road is hard, but I think that this team is capable of more. We will make some adjustments this week."

Stetson's offense was on from the start, as the team had a pair of baserunners reach in the opening frame. Though unable to capitalize on that opportunity, the team got to work in the second inning and used a five-spot to take an early lead. Freshman starter Mason Miller (Odessa, Fla./Mitchell HS) left the game with one out and the bases loaded after allowing two earned runs to cross. He was relieved by classmate Jason Woodward (Titusville, Fla./Titusville HS), who let three of the inherited runners score before getting out of the jam.

The Hatters continued to do damage in the following frame, using a two-run bomb to extend their advantage to 7-0.

FGCU struggled to string anything together in the front end of the ballgame, stranding three runners in the first three innings. Eventually, the Eagles were able to score their first run of the game when sophomore Stephen Wilmer (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS/ECU/Pasco-Hernando State) roped a double that drove in senior Marc Coffers (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS), trimming the lead down to 7-1.

Freshman Najer Victor (Philadelphia, Pa./East Ridge HS) took over for Woodward at the start of the fourth. Though the defense was able to record the first out of the inning when they threw out the leadoff Hatter that was trying to rob a double, Stetson went on to tag up an additional four runs. Junior Tyler Shuck (Cape Coral, Fla./Canterbury HS) received the call in the bullpen with a pair of Hatters on the base paths and was able to prevent any further damage when he ended the frame with the home team up 11-1.

The Eagles were able to score for the second-consecutive inning when senior Richie Garcia's (Davie, Fla./West Broward HS) two-RBI single sent both redshirt-sophomore Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) and Farrow in. With no outs on the board, FGCU had a solid chance to continue to chip away at the lead, but the Hatters made a pitching change and the new arm retired three-straight.

Over the next two innings, Stetson added another two runs that re-extended the lead to 13-3. Shuck was only tagged with one, as a Green & Blue error allowed the Hatters to score in the bottom of the fifth.

Farrow was the only Eagle to get on base in the last three frames, as he singled in the seventh before his solo shot in the ninth cut the lead down to its final 13-4 margin. Other than the times he faced Farrow, Stetson's Jonathan Gonzalez was successful in stifling the Eagles down the stretch.

Gallo, who started on the bump in the top of the seventh, had similar success as he let up just one single and struck out one batter in two innings of work. Miller was tagged with the loss, moving him to 2-2 on the year.

The Eagles will return home to host FAU for a midweek game on Tuesday, March 30 at Swanson Stadium. The contest against the Owls, which is a makeup from a weekend series earlier this year, is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.

Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 40 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 23 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
