Spring Break 2021 canceled at some colleges; beaches still see crowds, multiple reports say - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Beaches in Texas and Florida are seeing crowds during the typical spring break months, according to multiple reports, despite colleges adjusting academic calendars or canceling break entirely to reduce coronavirus risk.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s warns against spring break travel, because travel in general increases the potential spread of COVID-19. USA Today reported out-of-state college students gathering on beaches in Florida. More than 100 partiers were arrested in South Beach this weekend, Local10 reports, though it’s not clear how many of the people at those parties were college-aged or students. In Texas, where the state lifted mask-mandates and restrictions, droves of people are headed to beaches.

Universities and colleges nationwide adjusted academic calendars to reduce any risk from traveling, adding reading days or alternative measures to give students a break. Some universities will allow for a spring break, but finish the year remotely. And for religious universities, there will still be a break to observe Easter.

Here’s what some Ohio universities and schools are doing for spring break 2021:

Cleveland State University - CSU moved spring break to January, extending winter break. The switch was intended to prevent any coronavirus spread through travel in March. The university instituted two reading days with no classes on March 10 and April 8.

Case Western Reserve University - CWRU students also will not have a spring break, but will have reading days on March 16 and March 24. The spring semester was also organized to begin on Feb. 1, leaving more time around the holidays and holiday travel. A remote-only three-week session took place in January.

John Carroll University - There was a change in Easter Break for JCU, but there’s still a week off. Easter Break will begin March 30 and end on April 7.

Notre Dame College - Notre Dame College will take Easter Break from April 1-5.

Cuyahoga Community College - Tri-C added a two-week remote learning period after winter break and canceled spring break. The spring semester is also ending a week earlier.

Oberlin College - Oberlin is on a three-semester system this year, rotating to allow for in-person academic experiences. See the college’s academic calendar here.

Ohio State University - OSU students will not have a spring break, but instead have two breaks in instruction. One was on Feb. 9, with the next scheduled for March 31.

Kent State University - KSU students will have a spring break from April 12-18, but classes will resume afterward remotely.

University of Akron - UA moved spring break to April 12-18 and after that will move classes to online-only.

Hiram College - Hiram College does not have a spring break and is offering 3-, 8- and 12-week classes for the spring semester.

Walsh University - Walsh split its spring semester into two sessions. Spring break is March 8-12.

Lake Erie College - Lake Erie College does not have a 2021 spring break, but does have a Spring Holiday on April 2, with no classes.
