LEESBURG, Fla. – Playing in its third double-header in three days, the softball team dropped a pair of games to Rutgers on Sunday, falling 12-9 and 6-5 in the twin bill. The team stands 2-4 on the year and will return to action in Leesburg Thursday against Maryland.
Game 1 | L, 12-9
An early 4-1 lead in the first inning evaporated with Rutgers plating seven runs in the second as the Boilermakers dropped the opener of the double-header 12-9. Sophomore Cora Bassett had a fine day at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-5 with a double, a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Rachel Becker, freshman Kaitlyn Brannstrom and junior Kaeley Hallada each chipped in with a pair of hits, with Becker scoring a pair of runs and driving one in, and Hallada and Brannstrom adding a run scored and RBI each.
Game 2 | L, 6-5
Leading for the majority of the game, the Boilermakers faltered late in the contest, surrendering a 5-3 edge in the seventh inning to fall 6-5. Becker was a perfect 4-for-4 batting in the second contest, including a double and three runs scored. In the DH she was a combined 6-for-7 with five runs scored, a double and an RBI. Bassett finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Bannstromm drove in a pair on one hit.
