Newton police are warning the community after a “cluster” of home break-ins that began on Monday in the Newton Highlands and Waban area.

Most of the six break-ins were reported on Monday night with a couple reported on Tuesday, according to police in a press release.

The first break-in was reported just after 8 p.m. Monday on Mary Ellen Road. The resident told police he had left his home around 6 p.m. and when he returned at 8 p.m., he noticed the break-in. The suspect or suspects were believed to have entered through a backdoor, police said.

The second break-in was reported about an hour later at 9 p.m. A vacant home on Winslow Road appeared to have been broken into sometime in the last three hours, someone with control of the property told police; the backdoor had been opened, he said. Nothing seemed to be missing.

Less than an hour later, at 9:50 p.m., police were called to Beethoven Avenue. The residents told police they were in a bedroom with the lights off upstairs when they heard someone upstairs.

“They observed a person in the bedroom area with a flashlight,” police said. “This suspect then fled down the stairs and out the front door.”

Police found that a window next to the deck “was pried open.”

Police were called to the fourth break-in around 10:40 p.m. on Harrison Street. The homeowner told police she was home alone in the basement when she heard footsteps upstairs. When she went into the living room, she heard people upstairs in the bedrooms. She then took off for a neighbor’s house and called police. While on the phone, she said she could see two people in her living room who were both about 5-foot-6-inches tall. The suspects were allegedly able to get inside through a backdoor, which was unlocked. An iPhone and a pair of diamond earrings were taken, according to police.

The fifth break-in was reported just before 10 a.m. Tuesday on Carver Road. The resident told police that around 6 a.m., she noticed an upstairs door, which is usually open, had been closed. Then, she saw a window above a bed open and a chair moved to just below the window outside. Police believe residents were home at the time of the incident.

While canvassing Carver Road on Tuesday for the break-in, an officer noticed signs of a break-in on Hinckley Road. The residents weren’t home, and inside some drawers were seen open, according to police.

Anyone who may know something about the break-ins is urged to call police at 617-796-2100 or use the department’s tip line by calling 617-796-2121.
