MSU Drops Doubleheader to Illinois - Michigan State Athletics

East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Illinois on Thursday in Leesburg, Fla. 
 
The Fighting Illini, among the top team receiving votes in both national polls this week, took advantage of the larger field with seven extra-base hits in the two games with 19 hits overall.  They improve to 7-1 overall while MSU falls to 2-6. 
 
The Spartans got three base hits from senior Caitie Ladd, who went 2-for-3 with a double in game one and another double in game two.  Jenae Wash was 2-for-3 with a double in game two, while freshman Alexis Barroso also had a two-run double for the Spartans.  MSU had a combined eight hits in the two games. 
 
The two teams complete the three-game series on Friday with a 2 pm first pitch. 
 
 
 
 
GAME ONE – Illinois 7, MSU 2
  • Illinois opened the scoring in the top of the third on a leadoff double and a one-out single down the left field line. 
  • MSU took the lead in the home half of the third when Marissa Trivelpiece reached on a hit by pitch, Caitie Ladd singled to left, and Kendall Kates reached and advanced to second on an outfield error which plated the two Spartan runners. 
  • Illinois used a pair of three-run innings to blow the game open, in the fourth and seventh. 
  • UI pitcher Sydney Sickels hit the first two batters for MSU in the home half of the sixth, but Sickels worked out of the jam with a groundout, caught stealing, and a strikeout. 
  • The Spartans had a pair of errors in the contest. 
  • Ashley Miller got the start and went 4.1 innings, surrendering one earned run, seven hits, and no walks while striking out three in taking the loss.  Sarah Ladd tossed three innings and allowed just two hits, striking out one.
  • None of the three pitchers in the game issued a walk, but Sickels hit three batters and Miller two.    Sickels tallied 11 strikeouts in the gameas she picked up the victory without allowing an earned run.
 
GAME TWO – Illinois 9, MSU 3
  • MSU scored three runs in the top of the first.  Kendall Kates reached on a one-out error, and Jenae Wash brought her home with a double to center.  After a walk to Kennedy Wyllie, Alexis Barroso smacked a double to right center to bring home the two runners for the early 3-0 lead. 
  • In the bottom of the third, a pair of triples for the Illini brought them within 3-2 with one out, and an RBI single brought the tying run across the plate.
  • Jala Wright came on in relief of Alli Walker (2.1 IP, 3 ER, 4 K) in the third.  She gave up three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth and sixth combined as the Illini totaled five extra-base hits among their 10 total. 
  • Jenae Wash went 2-for-3 in the nightcap with an RBI, while Alexis Barroso had the RBI double with two RBI. 
  • Illini pitcers Addy Jarvis and Tori McQueen combined for eight strikeouts and two walks, with McQueen tossing five innings of two-hit relief with seven K's.
