DURHAM, N.C. – Duke fell short against No. 14 East Carolina, 11-5, in a midweek baseball game Tuesday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Despite the loss, the Blue Devils (6-6) put together a balanced offense as all nine positional starters registered a hit in the contest. Redshirt junior Wil Hoyle led the team with a hit, two runs, an RBI and a home run.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Luke Fox earned his second start of the season Tuesday, allowing five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work.

The visitors broke the game open in the top of the second inning after scoring four runs on six hits. Duke responded strong however, scoring three runs of its own in the bottom half highlighted by a triple from graduate student Chase Cheek and Hoyle's solo home run.

After exchanging runs in the third inning, the Pirates held a 5-4 edge until an RBI ground-rule double from Michael Rothenberg in the bottom of the fourth scored Hoyle from second and leveled the game.

Unfortunately, East Carolina broke the deadlock in the sixth after a four-run frame to take the lead, 9-5. Duke tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh when it brought the tying run up to the plate with bases loaded but weren't able to convert. The Pirates scored two additional runs in the eighth to ultimately seal the game.

Both teams went deep into their bullpens as each saw seven different pitchers take the mound. Sophomore Colten Smith and freshman Mason Manriquez each threw a scoreless inning for the Blue Devils. Smith allowed a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Manriquez walked two but found his footing for two groundouts.

Duke is back in action this weekend when it hosts NC State for a three-game series at the DBAP. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday.

Postgame Notes:
  • Hoyle's home run was the second of his career, with the other being against Iowa last season.
  • Cheek tripled for the fourth time of his career, and his first since 2019 against Clemson.
  • Two Blue Devils made their debuts as Smith and Manriquez took the mound for the first time.
  • Rothenberg has now reached base in 36 consecutive games.
