Women's Basketball Drops Close Scrap at No. 23/21 Ohio State - Rutgers University Athletics - Rutgers Scarlet Knights

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A career night for Sayawni Lassiter and an offensive outburst from Victoria Morris helped Rutgers women's basketball (7-17, 0-12) keep No. 23/21 Ohio State on the ropes for the majority of a Monday evening at Value City Arena and live on Big Ten Network before the Buckeyes held on for a 61-57 win.
 
The Scarlet Knights were scrappy throughout a game with seven tie scores and six lead changes, the latest of which came with 5:51 left in the game as Ohio State took back the advantage from Rutgers at 53-51. A 4-0 RU run by Morris and Osh Brown had given Rutgers a 51-50 lead a minute earlier.
 
Lassiter reached a new career-high with 15 points on a shot that emptied the air out of the Schottenstein Center. Her fifth three-pointer of the game came with 44 seconds left and pulled the Scarlet Knights within one at 57-56. The Buckeyes got a stop and made four free throws to cap a perfect 14-of-14 night from the charity stripe and to hang on for a tight win at home.
 
Five of Rutgers' Big Ten losses have come by five or less points. This one was close due to Rutgers' explosive 24-point second quarter that started with Morris' personal 4-0 spurt and ended with a 10-0 RU run with Lassiter burying a couple of treys. Ohio State rebounded out of the locker room with a 13-0 rally to begin the third quarter.
 
Lassiter's career night ended with 15 points all on three-pointers, going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and adding a team-high three assists. Morris scored 14 on efficient 6-of-9 shooting, while Osh Brown nearly grabbed another double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
 
Tyia Singleton led the Scarlet Knights' rebounding effort with 10 as RU dominated the Buckeyes on the glass, 43-28. Rutgers also outshot OSU 42 to 32%, but 20 RU turnovers led to Ohio State winning points off turnovers, 24-9. Led by Morris' 14 and Awa Sidibe's eight, Rutgers bench significantly outscored the Buckeyes, 22-2.
  • Sayawni Lassiter's career-high 15 points surpassed her previous best of 13 against Harvard earlier this season on Nov. 17.
  • Ohio State is the nation's No. 4 scoring offense at 83.2 points per game, a mark that ranks second in the Big Ten, before managing just 61 on Monday. Rutgers has held 40 of its last 43 opponents under their average scoring marks.
  • Rutgers has now equaled or outrebounded opponents in 19 of 24 games this season with an average margin of +5.8, which ranks third in the Big Ten.
  • Victoria Morris' 6-of-9 mark from the field was her best of the season at .667.
  • Double-figure scoring career marks: Brown (83rd), Sayawni Lassiter (3rd), Victoria Morris (73rd).
  • The Starting 5 of Sayawni Lassiter, Jailyn Mason, Lasha Petree, Tyia Singleton, and Osh Brown took the floor as the starting unit.
  • Rutgers is now 7-14 against Ohio State, including a 3-8 mark as Big Ten regular season opponents and a 2-7 grade in Columbus.
Rutgers has nearly a week of before returning home to Jersey Mike's Arena to host Penn State on Sun., Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.
